Steeling myself with a strong coffee to sit down and read major new report on avoiding dangerous #climatechange (@IPCC_CH #SR15, available here: ipcc.ch/report/sr15/). My takes to follow (1/n)
As always, the #peerreview effort by @IPCC_CH is Herculean. A couple hundred volunteer scientists read & cited 6,000+ studies to support conclusions w/ evidence. Responded to 42,001 comments in 3 rounds of review. The most robust process there is to establish scientific consensus
Now, this #SR15 report title is descriptive, but doesn't exactly roll off the tongue...

I saw this story and was like heeeey water is wet and also when will these people ever think about asking all racial minorities at the same time? or disaggregating by race? whatever, we know the answer. physicsworld.com/a/isolated-fem…
besides my snarky comments on CAPTAIN OBVIOUS, there is also the matter of recognizing the filtering effect associated with who stays, especially for Black, Latinx, and Native students who are almost always a one of a kind in their programs
In my grad programs I was the only North American minority ethnic of any kind for every year except the one year that I crossed over with a Latina. So 1. recognize the incredible staying power of anyone who stayed.

Now up is @BrytheFlyGuy on how to translate the hard science behind systematics and taxonomy to the public through #scicomm #SpnhcTdwgNZ

He compares radio interviews to kale: you probably don’t like it/them the first time, but then you know it’s good for you and eventually come to like it/them.

Today, our paper

“The mammalian decidual cell evolved from a cellular stress response”

is published @PLOSBiology

dx.doi.org/10.1371/journa…

👇👇 Here’s a thread for a broader audience w/ highlights of the data/figures

a kind of Twitter paper summary (TPS Report)

#scicomm
The idea for this project was conceived by Günter Wagner at @yale_eeb @YaleWestCampus

Together we designed, analyzed, & executed the experiments with co-authors Jamie Maziarz, @OliGriffith, @CongLiang3, @ArunRChavan, & @mnnamani
Here’s a summary: in the recent common ancestor of mammals, 👶 attaching to mom’s uterus caused inflammation & cell stress. Ancestrally mom just wanted 👶 out! In the lineage leading to🏃‍♀️, this stress response became a structural part of a novel cell type, the decidual cell

A few thoughts about this Humanities article making the rounds

1) if declining humanities enrollments are due to misperception of low value, then WE need to do better job selling ourselves... #humcomm needs to be the new #scicomm

theatlantic.com/education/arch…
2) Humanities (and social sciences) departments need to reward public engagement that highlights the value and relevancy of our disciplines to modern society. We need to highlight to everyone what they can learn from our rigorous methods and nuanced approaches into humanity
3) Humanities departments need to adapt. The article points out that newer, identity related fields have been successful during this crisis (ethnic, gender, and cultural studies). These are still minor components of most traditional humanities departments' course offerings

Welcome new followers! Are you ready to play one of the most fun #Scicomm games on Twitter??? Well get ready, because #CrowOrNo is here and ready to knock your socks off
How does #CrowOrNo work? Every Wednesday at about 11:30am PST I’ll post a photo of a bird. It’s up to you to decide if it’s a crow or not.
In this game, a correct crow answer constitutes any bird that has the word crow in its recognized common name (what you’d find in a field guide).

Q1 for #behavioralmedchat. Why social media???
A1. Because that is where advocacy occurs. Find me an org that does advocacy well but is not on social media. If you want to have an impact on an issue, you have to use the channels by which people get information and communicate. #behavioralmedchat
A1. Social media, Twitter especially, is a great way to get a message to a larger audience. Very little research in scientific journals reaches a large audience. #behavioralmedchat

Sadly, of the large carnivore species, more than 60% of them are threatened. Of the 17 showing widespread population declines, they now live in only 47% of their historical ranges. The tiger, for example, could have lost 95% of its historical range science.sciencemag.org/content/343/61…
There are fewer than 3,900 tigers left in the world today due to widespread habitat loss, historic overhunting (thanks to us Brits), #humanwildlifeconflict and, more recently, #illegalwildlifetrade. Sadly, tigers are desired for their skins as rugs & their parts for medicine
Tigers continue to decline in many parts of south-east Asia but their population seems to be fairing better in India due to strictly enforced protected areas & efforts from the Global Tiger Forum 🐯hindustantimes.com/environment/ti…

#ESOF2018 Bridging the gap between experts and the people: rethinking #scicomm with V Ramakrishnan, @MinuDTizabi, @AlainaGLevine @weitergen...
One problem we have is this explosion of knowledge, that needs to be curated between true, incertain and not true.
We need to re establish a trust system because it is not anymore scientists->journalists->public

2017 #TotalSolarEclipse Data from homemade Solar-X device:

All the sensors: Temperature, Visible, Infrared, UV and Solar power output registered a dip during the Solar Eclipse with peak dips during Totality.

Visible light dropped: 35%
Infrared: 87.5%
Solar Power Output: 95% Changes in Sensor Readings
Solar Cell Output showed the most variation. It dipped gradually at first and then started dipping drastically as Totality neared.

We concluded that a major portion of the Sun had to be covered by the Moon before human eyes notice any measurable change. Change in Light and Solar Cell Output
Temperature Change during #TotalSolarEclipse:

Temperature prior to Eclipse (first contact) was 34°C. The temperature readings were slowly rising before the eclipse.

But 1h 20 min into the eclipse, it started dipping. At totality, the temperature had dropped 10%, to 30.5°C. Change in Infrared Radiation and Temperature

Hi, #BTCon18!

We're Ask an Entomologist, a #SciComm project ran by @SciBugs, @Ms_Mars, and @Stylopidae!

We all have research jobs, but we're also interested in how people interact with insects in online spaces.

Let's explore how people think about bugs!
We've gathered our data by soliciting questions primarily from non-scientists through email and Facebook, and we analyze those questions to see what patterns are constant.

Lots of pest control questions, and lots of bugs people want ID'd.

However, once you get past that...
People think very deeply about how bugs work, where they live, and why they behave the way they do.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with @nujournalism's @serrano_alej to talk about how I broke into science journalism. It ended up being a conversation about writing – the joy and the struggle. I thought I'd share a few of the things we discussed. #scicomm
Scratch the itch: After a few years working mostly in the animal facility in the gene therapy department at @WeillCornell, I was itching to start a writing career. I started a blog called Freestyle Science. It was crap. But it got me writing.
There's always time: Fit writing into the interstitial spaces of life. Sure you have a 9-to-5, or you're rolling burritos 6-to-3, or you're giving guitar lessons on the weekends to a savant on the Upper East Side. If you love writing, you'll make the time.

Tuesday’s topic: researcher’s engagement in #scicomm. We’ll touch on a few subjects: S1/ why should (or not) researchers get involved? S2/ researcher vs #scicomm skills, what is important to know when engaging the public? S3/ what motivates/prevents researchers engagement?
Well I know I just started, but I will actually pause since it’s a very involving first @ScienceShakers I’m attending!
Kudos to the organizers of this first #scicomm community meeting in Paris
#scienceshakers
When I started the @CercleFSER, I tried to look at what was already being done, to not replicate it. Basically I tried to apply this big picture framework I had used in research: are there big holes in what is being done and low hanging fruits that can be leverages?

Monday, first topic: the journey to #scicomm.
There are plenty of ways to be involved in scicomm, as shown by the variety of hosts for this account.
I’ll discuss how I went from research to #scicomm, but I am curious about you.
What is your primary occupation?
If #scicomm is your primary occupation, which background do you have ?
If research is your primary occupation, what kind of #scicomm/outreach are you mostly involved in?

This is the problem with contemporary "feminists." It amounts to buyer's remorse. Young women CHOOSE to engage in behavior that ranges from personal conversations to sex. TBC: 1/?
p2
The young woman gets her feelings hurt and, with the guidance of older, more prominent women, they organize a social media campaign against the male "perp" (often adding texture to the story by turning him into a "perv").
p3
The women, now organized and believing that they are doing some serious good for all women, make something like a phone tree, and shamelessly RECRUIT other women to "come out" with more stories about the unacceptable behavior. Some women want "in."

I want to say a bit about #openscience, a topic near and dear to my heart. Open science is a lot of things, including #scicomm and #openaccess.
Fundamentally, open science is a commitment by researchers to make more of the products of their research open and accessible to all.
This means different things to different researchers. For someone writing lots of computer code, this could mean making the code publicly accessible on @github.

Introducing #ClassicalZooarchaeology
This is my 1st thread highlighting how animal bones can answer important questions in the ancient Mediterranean
#Zooarchaeology is often thought of as a niche study, but it relates to traditional forms of evidence
#scicomm #humanities
/1
When we think of #Classics, ancient texts are often prioritized. Animals were an important topic for ancient authors
For example, according to the TLG the lemma hippos (horse) is the 13th most common term in Homer’s Iliad (417 mentions). Horses were important to epic warfare
/2
It’s no surprise that animals – especially plow oxen – are important to Hesiod’s agricultural poem Works and Days
But texts don’t tell the whole picture about #AncientAnimals
Pigs are only mentioned once in Hesiod: boars should be castrated on the 8th day of the month (WD 790)
