Steeling myself with a strong coffee to sit down and read major new report on avoiding dangerous #climatechange (@IPCC_CH #SR15, available here: ipcc.ch/report/sr15/). My takes to follow (1/n)
As always, the #peerreview effort by @IPCC_CH is Herculean. A couple hundred volunteer scientists read & cited 6,000+ studies to support conclusions w/ evidence. Responded to 42,001 comments in 3 rounds of review. The most robust process there is to establish scientific consensus

besides my snarky comments on CAPTAIN OBVIOUS, there is also the matter of recognizing the filtering effect associated with who stays, especially for Black, Latinx, and Native students who are almost always a one of a kind in their programs
In my grad programs I was the only North American minority ethnic of any kind for every year except the one year that I crossed over with a Latina. So 1. recognize the incredible staying power of anyone who stayed.

Here’s a summary: in the recent common ancestor of mammals, 👶 attaching to mom’s uterus caused inflammation & cell stress. Ancestrally mom just wanted 👶 out! In the lineage leading to🏃♀️, this stress response became a structural part of a novel cell type, the decidual cell

2) Humanities (and social sciences) departments need to reward public engagement that highlights the value and relevancy of our disciplines to modern society. We need to highlight to everyone what they can learn from our rigorous methods and nuanced approaches into humanity
3) Humanities departments need to adapt. The article points out that newer, identity related fields have been successful during this crisis (ethnic, gender, and cultural studies). These are still minor components of most traditional humanities departments' course offerings

2017 #TotalSolarEclipse Data from homemade Solar-X device:
All the sensors: Temperature, Visible, Infrared, UV and Solar power output registered a dip during the Solar Eclipse with peak dips during Totality.
Visible light dropped: 35%
Infrared: 87.5%
Solar Power Output: 95%

Scratch the itch: After a few years working mostly in the animal facility in the gene therapy department at @WeillCornell, I was itching to start a writing career. I started a blog called Freestyle Science. It was crap. But it got me writing.
There's always time: Fit writing into the interstitial spaces of life. Sure you have a 9-to-5, or you're rolling burritos 6-to-3, or you're giving guitar lessons on the weekends to a savant on the Upper East Side. If you love writing, you'll make the time.
Tuesday’s topic: researcher’s engagement in #scicomm. We’ll touch on a few subjects: S1/ why should (or not) researchers get involved? S2/ researcher vs #scicomm skills, what is important to know when engaging the public? S3/ what motivates/prevents researchers engagement?

I want to say a bit about #openscience, a topic near and dear to my heart. Open science is a lot of things, including #scicomm and #openaccess.
Fundamentally, open science is a commitment by researchers to make more of the products of their research open and accessible to all.
This means different things to different researchers. For someone writing lots of computer code, this could mean making the code publicly accessible on @github.
