THREAD. Balanced teams vs. "diversity".

Some people are confused about whether, at @Atlassian, we've shifted our focus from creating intersectional justice and equitabe opportunities for everyone, with a spotlight on those who are underrepresented in tech.

That's easy: NOPE.
We're moving away from *language* that is outdated and a *barrier* to the progress we want to see. Our 2018 State of Diversity report (atlassian.com/diversity/surv…) showed us two problems with the word "diversity" (on top of other issues holding back #diversity & #belonging in tech).
1. People overwhelmingly associated the word with underrepresented or minority groups.
2. The minorities people associated with "diversity" with were gender and racial minorities.

Let's unpack why this is problemmatic af, A LESSON.

On @tagaq's recommendation, I had the chance to watch @Alethea_Aggiuq’s documentary #AngryInuk, It's about how #WhiteSupremacist #vegan lobbyists have decimated Inuit communities with food insecurity. If you care about justice, watch this: nfb.ca/film/angry_inuk
I want to be clear, opposition to the #sealhunt is #WhiteSupremacist and #racist in nature. It is absolutely clear to me that, at best, organizations like @peta ignore their impact on #Inuit. At worst, they're party to an intended programme of starvation.
In the entire course of her documentary, @Alethea_Aggiuq tried meeting with #vegan and #animalrights activists to discuss their impact on #indigenous communities. Every single attempt at communication was met with silence or avoidance.

This is EXTREMELY concerning. New research centre on Indigenous smoking is being funded by the tobacco industry.

Yes, you read that right: *funded by the tobacco industry*

(Thread)
It was all smiles and accolades at the launch, but everyone seems to be glossing over the centre’s funding source and the huge ethical problems that raises.

The centre is being funded by The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World. Here’s their President, Derek Yach, talking about the new research centre. vimeo.com/285901659

On Friday, four #Saami Reindeer Herding Communities, from both sides of the Swedish/Norwegian border declared a moratorium at the Nása Mountain, to challenge the proposed opening of a mine in the area.

What follows are excerpts from their Moratorium Statement:
Since time immemorial, the Nása Mountain has been used as grazing pastures by reindeer herding Saami. Through a system of ecologically sustainable hunting, fishing and reindeer husbandry, this area has become a site where Saami have co-existed with nature on its own terms.
Long before the State colonised the Nása Mountain area and decreed that every reindeer herder had to belong to a state-approved herding district, this mountain used to be a privately owned Saami tax district, as well as a reindeer herding district governed by consuetudinary laws.

Gather around everyone...it’s time for some very TRUE short stories morphed into a unbelievably one in the end.
I’ve grown up in a very mixed family and being a proud biracial kid.
But, let’s rewind to a lifetime ago where I wasn’t comfortable or was constantly questioned about “what are you”...
Just like any character in their story. I’ve had my own twist and turns in my life.

However, my experiences that always stood out always seem to involve my family.

I saw the bounty of this land, offered prayer, & reflected on the beauty around me, how it's able to housing such hurt...
I just got out of a cab. The driver asked what I do, I tried to deflect (I'm not shy, but weeks on the road have left me tired)…

Heartbreaking #thread.
I just gave birth to my second child & a sense of safety was a key part of healthy & positive outcomes for me & baby.
It seriously makes my heart ache to think of women afraid, feeling like unassisted birth is their best option. They deserve better.
