The President’s #Budget2018 Speech:
Our Response; A Joint Press Briefing by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi and Hon. Abdulrazak Namdas on behalf of the National Assembly.
1. We appreciate the fact that the 2018 Appropriations Law which was passed by the National Assembly on May 16th, 2018 was signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, June 20th, 2018.
2. In his speech at the signing ceremony, certain observations were raised about the work of the National Assembly and its Constitutional responsibility to modify and amend the budget estimates submitted to it by the Executive.

A few minutes past noon today, I signed the 2018 Appropriation Bill into Law. #Budget2018
I am however concerned about some of the changes @nassnigeria has made to the budget proposals I presented. The logic behind the Constitutional direction that budgets should be proposed by the Executive is that, it is the Executive that knows & defines its policies & projects.
Unfortunately, that has not been given much regard in what has been sent to me. The National Assembly made cuts amounting to N347 billion in the allocations to 4,700 projects submitted to them for consideration and introduced 6,403 projects of their own amounting to N578 billion.

Yesterday, a rare joint session of both houses of @nassnigeria met and issued resolutions that has set it on a collision course with @AsoRock, and holds important political and economic consequences for #Nigeria as it stares down the barrel of #election2019.
The tension between the 2 most important arms of the FG, both controlled by @OfficialAPCNg, has endured through the tenure of @MBuhari's administration and is consequential for the party, for the wider political state of the country and in driving economic policy.
Federal lawmakers, in passing a vote of confidence in the principal officers of @NGRSenate and @HouseNGR, condemned the “systematic harassment and humiliation by @AsoRock of perceived political opponents, people with contrary opinions including legislators and the judiciary,”

Hi, everyone; it’s time to play “short attention span politics, just ONE MORE TIME. Today, although it’s #Budget2018 & the Coalition have just proposed the most radical restructure of the tax system in favour of the rich for 40 years, it’s time to be distracted by...
“The Home Affairs and Integrity Agencies Legislation Amendment Bill 2017” which is being debated at its second reading in the lower house. A reading is the opportunity for AMENDMENTS to be made to what the government is proposing to become law. Now, remember, everyone...
(repeat after me)... Democracy-is-all-about-majorities! That means that in Australia, when a bill comes to the lower house of our parliament, the Liberal-National Coalition have the numbers to pass it because they have a majority! (spoiler: the majority makes them the government)

Dear any political party
Don't bother preaching tax cuts, debt-reduction through service cuts, as the fast-track to the future or a path to prosperity.
We've had a quarter century social experiment with that.
We're done with that fiscal fantasy.
If you're keen on debt reduction, grow the economy.
If you want more growth, support for women > trade or biz investment.
Women's estimated potential impact on growth (with supports) $150B by 2026. Trade's ~$12B by 2040.

Federal #Budget2018 articulated most elements of a plan to increase women's contribution to the economy, but not the next crucial step: a national strategy to improve access to affordable, high quality early childhood education for our kids.
That's why Poloz talked about it y'day

One way to analyse #Budget2018 is to not look at in isolation but as a stunningly well planned sequencing of moves, beginning from 2014 budget and culminating in this, the 5th and last full budget of Modi Government. #NewIndiaBudget 1/10
This sequencing, in respect of moves through budget, can be broadly classified into what has been done on the following fronts A) Aspirational Class ; B) Farmers; C) Women; D) Youth; E) Jobs and F) Overall macro economy. #NewIndiaBudget 2/10
A) Aspirational Class: Ensure every family has bank account---->Direct Transfer of Benefits & Subsidies--->Basic life & accidental insurance--->Enable Formal credit without collateral---->Raise standard of living---->Ensure Medical Insurance for whole family. #NewIndiaBudget 3/10
