A5. I was super-annoyimg about whether to disclose once I reached acceptance of my situation.

So I wrote about it on my small business blog. And people embraced me so warmly. #spooniechat
A5. I learned that a LOT of people are disabled entrepreneurs and hiding it. #Ableism is that strong. The culture is that focused on working yourself into an early grave.

I feel compelled and happy to help if I can.

Confused about person-first language? Is it acceptable or not? Here's a brief history on PFL and how it went from etiquette to ableism: #pfl #ableism #acutallyautistic
In 1983, at the dawn of the AIDS crisis, a brave group of activists stood up at a health conference and made a declaration which would later be known as The Denver Principles. It was a profound treatise on human rights in the medical profession which lives on to this day.
The Denver Principles opens with "We condemn attempts to label us as "victims," a term which implies defeat, and we are only occasionally "patients," a term which implies passivity, helplessness, and dependence upon the care of others. We are "People With AIDS."

When fighting Ableism, straw bans, inaccessibility, or the general oppression of society, I am uncomfortable that we tend to resort to, "What if you/your kid/your spouse/your friend/family member was disabled & needed this?"

It paints disability as something negative & to fear.
We can, or should be able to, state our truth, or the existence of others' truths, without relying on using hypothetical scenarios that target subconscious negative views and beliefs held by society. #Disabled #DisabledTwitter #StrawBan #Ableism #FightWithoutFears
And just a reminder aside that simulations of disability and disabled life are often harmful, and have been scientifically shown to have a negative impact on an individual's view regarding disability and life with one. #Disabled #DisabledTwitter #FightWithoutFear

A really weird thing about #MCAS is that I can eat a food and be fine, but if I eat leftovers of the exact same food a day or two later I'm ... not fine

Before I knew abt MCAS, I thought I was just immunosuppressed and reacting to bacteria other people could tolerate
This is sort of true, actually

I was probably reacting to the products of microbes breaking down food

More on the science of that here

When I have a bad MCAS reaction, it looks a LOT like food poisoning

I won't go into the gory details, but at my worst I need IV fluids and prescription strength anti-nausea meds (which happen to also treat anaphylaxis like symptom)

#storytime: [Thread] The dark sides of “social” enterprises - #Ableism in disguise

The other day, I was referred to the owner a social enterprise in order to apply job in my profession. The org seemed impressed by my portfolio and I eventually got invited to a job interview.
It all sounded promising and I was excited to meet with the company. Everything went well until they asked about my expectations. I was a bit surprised, since I was already in the job interview, but I highlighted that I’m looking for employment or at least continuous remote work.
Much to my shock, the only thing this organization had to offer was a “sheltered workshop”, where I would be working for free and maybe one day, some employer might hire me on a subsidized job, where I can only be paid minimum wage.
