THREAD: This summer @DNI @SenDanCoats said that when it came to #cybersecurity, the lights were "blinking red." After reading @KimZetter's penetrating piece, it is more clear than ever that when it comes to #ElectionSecurity, America has turned off the alarm system. /1
Quite simply, despite an unprecented act of information warfare combining espionage, computational propoganda, computer hacking and exploitation of our election systems, our country has not taken sufficient action to reduce the risk of it happening again and again /2
I don't mean to disrespect my former @DHS colleagues, who repeatedly have said they have seen no signs of direct manipulation of election votes, but this quote from @KimZetter's piece is damning: "the truth is that no one has really looked for evidence" of election hacking. /3

Meet Tim Graboski, aka whiterook6. He works for AggregateIQ as software developer. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because they helped #CambridgeAnalytica during the 2016 election. And apparently they’re still interested in our elections. #Midterms2018 #osint #infosec
We know that part of the seed data for the models used by CA came from Facebook surveys users filled in as part of an app. Well doesn’t this look familiar....this is a project called Campaign Pillar aka Check-In. “AIQ” is plainly visible. As are the targeted election questions.
Well this little gem comes to us courtesy of Tim’s GitHub repository, found here : github.com/whiterook6/che… Currently available to the public (cloned in case it comes down).

1/4 WHY WE CAN'T MAKE PROGRESS ON #ELECTIONSECURITY @CNBC!! Because of constant misrepresentation of facts by media outlets like YOU cnbc.com/2018/08/17/how… "it's actually quite difficult for outsiders to directly manipulate votes/voting machines aren't connected to the internet"
2/4 Here, @SEGreenhalgh, an #ElectionSecurity expert debunks that myth. in an interview I did with her at #defcon2018.
3/4 See also this excellent article by @KimZetter The Myth of the Hacker-4Proof Voting Machine. The key word in that headline is #Myth. nytimes.com/2018/02/21/mag…

THREAD: by now, many of you have seen posts or articles re: @defcon’s @VotingVillageDC, and the ease with which machines and websites were attacked and exploited. And now, THIS is happening....#unhackthevote #infosec #ElectionSecurity
For YEARS, advocates of election integrity have been pointing out these issues. This isn’t new. After 2000, the Help America Vote Act was passed to modernize our elections, first proposed by Robert Ney (R-OH). Signed into law by George W. Bush. So much for this theory:
At the same time, Bush’s @TheJusticeDept began an investigation into alleged #VoterFraud. Guess what it turned up? No masses of non-citizens voting, nothing that could come close to altering an election. nytimes.com/2007/04/12/was…

There's been a lot of talk about #electionsecurity since we know #Russia will try to hack the #2018Midterms.

This thread will give brief overviews of #votingmachines, #opensource software & #handmarked #paperballots. THREAD 1/10 #MondayMotivaton
Jurisdictions don't have 💰 or staff to buy new machines frequently or keep the ones they have up to date with security updates. There's no voting machine that can't be hacked. 2/10 nytimes.com/2018/02/21/mag…
Manufacturers & election officials say since the machines aren't connected to the internet, they can't be hacked. But that's not accurate. Polling places transmit voting results using modems. 3/10 #technology #hack #telecommunications
