So... a while back I tweeted about a bit of functionality I've long thought would be a cool one to have for Twitter:
I would often see people post tweetstorms, long threads of related tweets, to tell an extended story.
Invariably people see these threads and say "Why don't/didn't you just post that on your website as a blog post instead?"

(In fact, why don't you try it on this very tweet?)

Hello #WordPress ecosystem.
I have been invited to share my #knowledge at an upcoming #WordCamp in #Africa.
Unfortunately I can’t afford the travel expenses, so I’m sending out this “message in a bottle” to see if any company out there is willing to #sponsor me.

I need to expand on this, I guess.
Yes, wonderful @yoast has established a #diversityfund and has graciously sponsored 2 of the 9 #WordCamp I have spoken at this year.
Me has sponsored all the rest, investing close to 3000€ to date.

I am self employed and a sole provider. This means that I can only rely on myself to sustain my mortgage and my living costs.
It also means that when I travel to speak at Camps I can’t work, so I am spending and not earning.

My concern with WordPress #Gutenberg is that WordPress core developers don't have anyone to nag them with the authoritative voice of the user.

Let me explain...
Here's what I mean. I've worked at 3 software companies and I've seen a dynamic play out that drives great product development.

Great products are developed when Sales and Support lobby Engineering over The Roadmap.
When Support has to save customer after customer because of the same problem, you best believe they will be in Engineering's ear

When a Sales woman loses a deal (and her commission) because of the lack of a feature, you better believe Engineering will hear about it

My @Uber driver last night, going home from airport asked me where was I coming from.
Told here about #WCEU
- what is that, she asked.
- the European Conference for #WordPress, I said.
Her eyes sparkling, she grabbed the wheel firm, looked in the rear view mirror at me and said,
almost whispering:
- I installed that last week on my own, I want to sell accessories for women online, to support my kids.
No wedding ring on her hand, but I did not ask details, not sure if single mom or not.
Instead, once we arrived, I spent 30’ going over ecommerce options
for WordPress, recommended @WooCommerce, explained #SSL and #GDPR.
She only interrupted a few times to say “wait, wait!” as she was writing notes on her phone.
I was cold, exhausted, my family waiting inside, yet I was fascinated to share as much as possible with her. #WCEU

Usually, people learn languages + tools to start or further a career as a programmer, engineer, etc. Otherwise, people typically stick to what is easily available / understandable to them (e.g., smartphone apps, consumer applications and OS's, typically no programming).
Both these options are fine, but I don't think there needs to be a divide between technologists and non-technologists, programmers and non-programmers. Time will blur and destroy this divide, like it did with previous soft technologies writing + money (breakingsmart.com/en/season-1/a-…).
I'm not taking either path right now. Learning to use technologies like shells, text editors, and programming languages has been pleasurable and useful for me. I don't want to focus or define my career around them, though.

I think we will look back at 2017 and see it as the year the #WordPress project started to fracture. As much as the community desperately wants to see WordPress as an enterprise CMS, projects like #Gutenberg show it is anything but.
Gutenberg is a phenomenal piece of software and everyone involved in it should be proud of what they have achieved. But we also shouldn't be afraid to call it what it is. It's a move toward WordPress being a site builder.
It's a shift away from fellow PHP-based CMSs like @CraftCMS, #EE, @statamic, @getgrav, @grabaperch, @drupal and the countless other custom-field based CMSs out there. It's a move away from one of the key features of a real enterprise ready CMS. Native structured content.
