I have many issues with the new geoengineering Nature paper which I'll list below
1) it claims to be original but Kalidindi (2015) finds a similar result with a climate model link.springer.com/article/10.100…
2. it uses very choppy post-eruption data that is over 20 years old - how reliable is this data and how applicable to present/future crop distributions?
The (often real) risks of solar #geoengineering make for sensationalist media coverage. In this article, the researcher says "We’re not saying that geoengineering harms agriculture on net" yet the headline is "Geoengineering... may harm major crops" 1/n pbs.org/newshour/scien…
Here, a researcher says "our findings suggest that the side effects of the treatment are just as bad as the original disease" yet the headline is "[Geo]Engineering... could ruin our food supply" 2/n mashable.com/2018/08/08/geo…
and here, the *article* says 'the beneficial effects on crop yields... would be “essentially negated” by the loss in crops due to the reduction in sunlight' while the headline is 'Reflecting sun's rays would cause crops to fail' 3/n theguardian.com/environment/20…
