I spent the day listening to #ArethaFranklin and getting emotional more often than I expected.

I have always loved Aretha Franklin. I even loved the eras that other fans would've preferred to pretend did not exist.

In tribute here are my favorite
recordings:

1/
"Don't trouble the water..."

My mom used to sing this song to me whenever I was upset as a child, which was often. Elvis performed her favorite version.

I loved the original, but for me it's Aretha rendition and it's incredible vocal arrangement .

2/

#Aretha was an instrument of the gods.

When she sang it looked both effortless and all consuming.

Like Tina, when Aretha covered a song the original often receded from your consciousness.

"Spanish Harlem" is Aretha's song.

Welcome to #slatespeak, a weekly, radical Christian forum - tonight, we’re talking about death - what it is, when we’ve experienced it, how we deal with it…It's a lot, but as @GlennonDoyle says, we can do hard things. We can do this peeps! And we are not alone.
You can follow using tweetchat.com, twubs.com, or tweetdeck.com, to enhance your experience. I'm a simple chick and I just use twitter. I'm pretty sure @crazypastor and @rev_david would have something to say about that... #slatespeak
As this is a community of faith (contrary to what some on Twitter think), we begin with prayer. So, let's pray! #slatespeak

OBAMAS ON ARETHA: "Graced with a glimpse of the divine."

CLINTONS ON ARETHA: "One of America's greatest national treasures."

TRUMP ON ARETHA: "She worked for me."

#ArethaFranklin
UPDATE: To be transparent, I also see he tweeted this: "The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, is dead. She was a great woman, with a wonderful gift from God, her voice. She will be missed!"

Which doesn't excuse saying she "worked" for him.
To anyone in the comments saying I took Trump's words out of context, I say this: There is NO appropriate context for him to say "she worked for me" about #ArethaFranklin's passing. I highlighted those words because NO OTHER PRESIDENT would do it.

Aretha was nothing short of amazing. I can't say anything anyone else isn't gonna say....and Quest is gonna eulogize her more perfectly than I could ever. So instead, here are 10 of the best musical performances of hers...in my opinion.

#RestInPower #ArethaFranklin
Even Burt Bachrach couldn't imagine this song sounding better than this. Girlfriend says to "answer my prayer", and you believe her.

Her voice was so perfect. Just....perfect.

I want to talk about how I use Aretha Franklin's fabulous "fur coat" Obama Kennedy Center Honors 2015 performance in my American popular culture class. Beyond the amazing gifs, it's a powerful moment in the intergenerational fight for Civil Rights bit.ly/1l3g0zp
I distribute the lyrics to "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" first released in 1967 to my students when we are studying Civil & Women's Rights. I have them analyze the song's lyrical content. When I first ask them what it's about, they initially say it's a love song.
While the song was written by @Carole_King & Gerry Goffin it was first released by #ArethaFranklin on @AtlanticRecords & it's also featured on the "Aretha in Paris" album giving it a global audience in 1968 bit.ly/1jpMKz2

"Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade—our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect."—@BarackObama & @MichelleObama on #ArethaFranklin's passing.
