Exactly a year ago, @realDonaldTrump made the cowardly decision to terminate #DACA but sent AG Sessions to face the nation. Sessions glowed as he delivered the hate-filled news. 1/
Within hours, our courageous plaintiffs Martin Batalla-Vidal @elianadreams @antonioalarconc & many more members of @MaketheRoadNY courageously sued to block Trump's decision to end #DACA 2/
We @NILC_org have the great privilege of representing them along w/ @MaketheRoadNY & @WiracYls. Since then #DACA recipients have also courageously sued as have @DemocraticAGs & our civil rights partners like @NAACP & @MALDEF are also defending #DACA 3/

One year ago today, President Trump announced he was ending the #DACA program. With the stroke of a pen, he could fix it and give #Dreamers the future they deserve in the only country they call home. #SaveDACA
Since President Trump announced he was ending #DACA one year ago, he has rejected at least 6 bipartisan deals to give #Dreamers a future here in America. He’s proven time and again he has no interest in solving the crisis he created.
Instead of working with Democrats, Trump has sabotaged every effort to save #Dreamers and tried to put his entire hardline immigration agenda on their backs. We need bipartisan action, not hateful, anti-immigrant rhetoric. #DreamActNow

6 years ago, the government began accepting the first applications for the #DACA program, changing the lives of 800,000 young immigrants who could now receive temporary protection from deportation, study, and legally work in the only country they have ever known. #ProtectDreamers
I was there when #Dreamers came to Navy Pier by the thousands to apply for #DACA. They just wanted the chance be a part of America’s future. nytimes.com/2012/08/16/us/…

The Trump Executive Order to stop separating kids from their parents is classic lipstick on a pig. Their border policy is still an immoral and un-American pig.
There is apparently no plan, nor ability, to reunite parents and kids that are now separated. Some parents have been deported without their children and it may be impossible to identify other children who are being held. The damage already done is deep and long lasting.
The Executive Order will permit indefinite detention of families with their children in internment camps, even though that’s illegal under existing law. The Flores case prohibits indefinite detention of minors, accompanied or not.

On this day 6 years ago President Obama established #DACA. This program gave young immigrants the chance to come out of the shadows and be part of the only country they’ve ever called home.
In September of last year, President Trump made the cruel decision to end #DACA. Now, 800,000 Dreamers face deportation to countries they have never known.
I’ve been urging Republican leaders in Congress to do the right thing by these kids and pass the bipartisan #DreamAct. It’s the only way to protect these talented students, teachers, nurses, and a whole host of others who love this country as much as anyone.

The horrific #Goodlatte #immigration bill soon up for debate isn't something to be "compromised" with. It's a harsh, intentional, irrevocable shift Trumpward.

Shred it.

Burn the ashes.

Scatter them upon the Antarctic plains.

Here are just a few of many reasons.
(1) CRIMINALIZATION of unlawful presence in the United States: White supremacy writ into law. For past 228 years, simply *being in U.S.* w/o permission was a civil offense w/no consequence other than deportation.
(NB: This was quickly rejected in 2005, but much more likely now)
(2) ONE HUNDRED THIRTY BILLION UNITED STATES TAXPAYER DOLLARS to fully militarize the Mexican border.

Even @Heritage, which otherwise mostly likes the bill, balked at this as "hard to justify." You don't say.

UPDATE: We are walking 250miles from NY to DC for the #DreamACT We and 86% of Americans want a #DreamActNow SHARE! pscp.tv/w/bVhPozFvTmps…

“The reason why we have the Statue of Liberty on an island is because we welcome immigrants... we all came here from somewhere.” We met Mrs. Johnson in our path and she said this to us before heading in for service. She did not stutter! #DreamActNow

"Why don't they just come legally?"

A HYPOTHETICAL CASE STUDY

35 year old Dreamer, #DACA expiring Mar 2018. Came to US with parents at age 4. No criminal record. Never left US.
Goes to see an immigration lawyer his family's been working with for years.

Privileged, because most cannot afford counsel. Though they're "lawbreakers," the government doesn't provide them lawyers.

Let's figure out how to help our Dreamer!
"Leave and come back legally."

Leaving will trigger a 10 year bar to reentry. A waiver (forgiveness) exists, but our Dreamer doesn't qualify. He has no kids or spouse who are US citizens or green card holders. An uncle is, but that doesn't help.

1. FACT CHECK: Dreamers DID NOT break the law. They were brought here BY THEIR PARENTS as children. They are not responsible and should not be penalized for someone else’s wrong. #basicethics #nosoullesspolitics #TruthMatters #DreamActNow
2. FACT CHECK: Dreamers DO PAY TAXES. Under DACA Dreamers are able to work, pay taxes, Social Security, build businesses, pay business registration fees, etc. #TrumpShutDown pitting Dreamers against “tax paying Americans” is ignorant as hell. #nosoullesspolitics #DreamActNow
3. FACT CHECK: Who is holding whom hostage? #TrumpShutdown is holding America hostage—trying to force us into #humansacrifice ritual: “Choose white children over brown immigrants. Dems said #NO! #ShutItDown #WeSeeYou #DreamActNow #nosoullesspolitics .@chuckschumer @NancyPelosi

A thread on Trump's new buzzword, #ChainMigration.

You'll hear it constantly now. Some horrendous threat that must end in order to move on the #DreamAct. (Plus a wall.)

But how new is it? And what does it actually mean? @Allandaros and I investigated.
First, the term chain migration exists nowhere in the immigration law. Not in the Immig & Nationality Act, the CFR, field manuals, memos, or FAQ's.

The term for individuals sponsoring their family members is called (surprisingly): family-based immigration.
Our immigration laws only allow spouses, parents, children, and siblings to be petitioned. You must be a permanent resident or US citizen in order to do it. Sometimes the wait is 1 year or so. Other times, decades.

There's no direct way to sponsor an uncle, grandparent, etc.

THREAD: It’s clear that Trump doesn’t actually care about having an effective military, or keeping us safe, his priority is white nationalist purges. #VetsVsHate
Yesterday, the White House shared a video of President Trump once again using the military community as props to advance his bigoted and un-American agenda.
In the video, Trump accused immigrants of being a national security threat, and called for extreme and unprecedented reductions in legal immigration, intentionally tearing apart families.

Democrats are simply asking for action on the broad set of bipartisan priorities before the Congress:/1 #ABetterDeal #DemPartyPlatform #Democrats #DemForce #DemPriorities

My thread re news that @SpeakerRyan tells conservatives that #DACA will be part of spending deal huffp.st/IItqvQl
This is a great 1st step by the Speaker. It's clearly a trial balloon but also critical that he's being proactive & starting discussions
As always, the devil is in the details. We @NILC_org & @ImmJusticeFund remain steadfast in our commitment to achieve a real clean #DreamAct

It's still hard to believe that the #DACA program ended today, and that there is still no concrete legislation passed for 800,000 of us.
you know something, DACA really changed things. Not only for 800,000 of us, but for our families & communities. For me it came my senior yr
You cant undo our work as DACA recipients. You cant take back our education. You cant unsee our stories of triumph and struggles #HereToStay

A thread of what #DACA is and isn't because #DACA works and it is nothing close to a "free ride."
#DACA is a workers permit. It is not a way to go to college. We still do not qualify for federal aid (FAFSA/Pell grants/student loans)
DACAmented folks PAY taxes. We (all undocumented imm) even add to Social Security taxes & don't see any of it.
