A story in honor of the #TexasSenateDebate:

My parents live in #EastTexas, in a district represented by one of the most conservative members of #Congress. However, my mom is one of the most liberal I know.
After 39 years of marriage, my dad finally let my mom put a bumper sticker on the back of his pickup truck (b/c #Texas) that said "I vote for Democrats." @TexasYDs @scyd_texas @texasdemocrats @BGTX @SmithDems
A few months ago, my dad had to take his truck into the shop. While it was there, one of the workers scratched D-E-M-O-C off the sticker so it read "I vote for rats." Understandably, my mom (who is 71 & under 5 ft, but raised 6 daughters & terrifying when need be) was angry.

One year ago today, President Trump announced he was ending the #DACA program. With the stroke of a pen, he could fix it and give #Dreamers the future they deserve in the only country they call home. #SaveDACA
Since President Trump announced he was ending #DACA one year ago, he has rejected at least 6 bipartisan deals to give #Dreamers a future here in America. He’s proven time and again he has no interest in solving the crisis he created.
Instead of working with Democrats, Trump has sabotaged every effort to save #Dreamers and tried to put his entire hardline immigration agenda on their backs. We need bipartisan action, not hateful, anti-immigrant rhetoric. #DreamActNow

A short important thread on DACA: 1- Those who have DACA, go ahead & put in your renewal application even if your status doesn’t expire in 150 days. USCIS will accept the renewal application for NOW. 2. As of Aug. 8 there could be a 🛑 stop on all renewals from a fed judge in TX.

@GOP @realDonaldTrump Any chance that’s because his immigration policies are based on racism, xenophobia, fear mongering and lies, .@GOP?

What’s positive about orphaning innocent immigrant children?

His policy to separate families was so bad he had to back off.

@GOP @realDonaldTrump .@GOP

His Travel Ban was so obviously a Muslim Ban he failed twice at passing it and had to add nationals from NK and Venezuela to go around it.

It was supposed to have a temporary suspension (90 days from certain countries, 120 for refugees) while vetting was improved.

2/
@GOP @realDonaldTrump .@GOP

Trump has taken advantage of the fact most Americans are unaware of immigration legislation and how it works to lie to them.

He lies about how the Diversity Visa Program (“visa lottery”) and Family Sponsored visas (“chain migration”) work.

Never give up hope. When we give up, there are countless others whose lives will be hurt far more than they are now. This is when we find out what we are made of. Get involved & channel your anger into electing candidates at all levels of government.
Let's elect candidates who will fight for universal healthcare, who will fight to end gun violence, who will fight for women's rights, who will fight for our union brothers & sisters, who will fight for #Dreamers & those who want to come to America for a better life
Don't allow this dark cloud that this current administration has caused to be the reason we stop fighting. That's what they want & what they're counting on. Let's show them that America is truly better than racism, xenophobia, trans & homophobia, Islamophobia & outright hatred

THREAD: I've been going hard at @RepCurbelo and @RepJeffDenham for working with Trump and Stephen Miller to write a bill that eviscerates our asylum laws and would detain kids for months or years. #FamiliesBelongTogether

I want to walk you through what this bill does. /1
This is the bill they wrote behind closed doors. Curbelo and Denham got to be original cosponsors of this bill in exchange for turning their backs on #Dreamers and abandoning an effort that would have brought bipartisan immigration bills to the Floor today. /2
See how they strike clause (iii)? This is the part of their bill that says Border Patrol can remove unaccompanied children from the country--without ever seeing a judge, lawyer, etc.--even if the kids do not have the capacity to understand that they are agreeing to be removed. /3

The Trump Executive Order to stop separating kids from their parents is classic lipstick on a pig. Their border policy is still an immoral and un-American pig.
There is apparently no plan, nor ability, to reunite parents and kids that are now separated. Some parents have been deported without their children and it may be impossible to identify other children who are being held. The damage already done is deep and long lasting.
The Executive Order will permit indefinite detention of families with their children in internment camps, even though that’s illegal under existing law. The Flores case prohibits indefinite detention of minors, accompanied or not.

The horrific #Goodlatte #immigration bill soon up for debate isn't something to be "compromised" with. It's a harsh, intentional, irrevocable shift Trumpward.

Shred it.

Burn the ashes.

Scatter them upon the Antarctic plains.

Here are just a few of many reasons.
(1) CRIMINALIZATION of unlawful presence in the United States: White supremacy writ into law. For past 228 years, simply *being in U.S.* w/o permission was a civil offense w/no consequence other than deportation.
(NB: This was quickly rejected in 2005, but much more likely now)
(2) ONE HUNDRED THIRTY BILLION UNITED STATES TAXPAYER DOLLARS to fully militarize the Mexican border.

Even @Heritage, which otherwise mostly likes the bill, balked at this as "hard to justify." You don't say.

As Trump’s March 5th deadline for #DACA fast approaches, #DREAMers remain in limbo.

3 Court decisions to block the Trump admins phase out of #DACA give recipients temporary relief, but those cases can be reversed at any point!

DC, March 5th:
MARCH FOR THE #DreamActNow
I urge you to call your representatives and tell them you demand protection for #DREAMers

The fear these Americans feel as their own nation refuses to act is too painful to bear. Imagine your life hung on the thread of GOP indifference.

Demand your reps pass the #DreamActNow
Don’t be intimidated by the prospect of calling your representatives. They work for you!

Here is a short primer on how to make the best calls.

People in power define social identities as they have the means to control the narrative – news coverage, platforms to broadcast their platforms, & the power to influence law enforcement and legislation. Social identity affects how people perceive themselves and others. 3

This afternoon the Senate is turning to DACA and immigration, beginning with a “motion to proceed” vote. The burden is on Republicans to fix the mess that Donald Trump made on #DACA, as a majority of Americans want them to. [Thread]
Remember, we got here because Donald Trump ended the DACA program back in Sept. And 20,000 DACA recipients have already lost their protections as a result. He then rejected a bipartisan agreement reached by @SenatorDurbin and @LindseyGrahamSC, because it wasn’t racist enough.
So here we are — in an open debate on immigration with a Republican-controlled Congress. If you care about immigrants and #Dreamers, you should be worried. And while we all want relief for Dreamers, we can’t and won’t take just any deal.

Just got back from #SOTU. Here are my thoughts: President Trump was eager to take credit for things he had nothing to do with and ignore the harm he has imposed on the country over the last year.
The American people deserve a leader who spends less time patting his own back and more time having their backs. Unfortunately, what we’ve seen from Trump has been anything but real leadership. #SOTU
Instead of starting his presidency with a single bipartisan proposal, Trump made an all-out assault on Americans’ health care. #SOTU

As a City Councilmember in Philly, I’ve been thinking a lot about tonight’s #SOTU. Here’s what I wish I would see in 45’s address tonight (although I’m not holding my breath). @LocalProgress /1
1st Economic Justice: Philly is the poorest large city in the US and PA’s $7.25 minimum wage is the lowest in the region. We have over 100K hourly workers in the city alone. /2
Our City Council instituted a 21st Century living wage, passed pay equity/anti-wage theft laws, and we’re holding hearings on #FairWorkweekPHL to address unpredictable hours and help workers and families. /3

Thread: Contacting your reps.

With so many calls to contact your reps on so many issues these days, it’s easy to be overwhelmed.

Here is a short primer on how to best contact them, and the most effective ways to go about doing that.
👉Calling your reps is best.

There are many ways to contact reps. Mail, email, social media and online petitions are supplementary, but staffers agree that calling is the best way to get attention. Other methods are often ignored, but calls must be answered.
👉Contact only your reps.

It can be tempting to contact reps who are not yours, especially leadership, but reps are only accountable to their own constituents. Those are the people who vote for them.

Remember, you have 2 Senators and 1 Congressman.

When are Democrats going to understand that we didn’t lose the Oval in 2016 because we didn’t have the *middle class* on our side?

We lost because of voter suppression, foreign interference, sexism, racism, media bias. Not because we didn’t pander to ¡white! concerns enough.
A Must Read: “Here is the troubling reality for civically minded liberals looking to justify their preferred strategies: Hillary Clinton talked about the working class, middle-class jobs, and the dignity of work constantly. And she still lost.” theatlantic.com/business/archi…
Let’s be clear here: when we turn the discussion away from #DACA and to the *middle class*, we are turning our backs on people of color and deeming their issues as lesser.

Just watched @TuckerCarlson talking to a #DACA girl and now I am really mad! She kept repeating over and over that it is Donald Trump’s fault for rescinding #DACA and talking over @TuckerCarlson rudely and defiantly. News flash #DACA girl ! In my opinion, it’s Obama‘s fault.
is the one who created DACA as an Executive Order as a TEMPORARY fix with its expiration date, creatively set to expire AFTER his final term ended . So blame Obama as he’s the one who created this problem!
Additionally, your parents came here ILLEGALLY and dragged you along with them , and we have no obligation to pay for your family ! I think #DACADreamers have been treated very well .

In light of what's going on with #Dreamers, it's time to talk about Japanese internment.

Because the #DACA showdown is Japanese internment 2.0.
Japanese immigrants in the 19th & early 20th centuries came to the US in large part for manual farm labor in California.

Sound familiar?
Japan had much more advanced horticulture than the US at that time, so these immigrants weren't just bringing brute labor. They were bringing a lot of basic how-to's of commercial farming that built the foundation for California's success as an agricultural powerhouse today.
