Just clarifying some stuff on the law on sexual harassment at the workplace, in light of the many incidents which are coming out. Slightly long thread, please read till the end. bit.ly/2E4v7b5
When someone at a place of work behaves in a sexual way towards women and it is unwanted, offensive, threatening, or humiliating, it is seen as a form of harassment.
There is no fixed definition of sexual harassment. It would change from person to person, but most importantly, it depends on how comfortable the woman is with the behavior.

There are diff views of what construes as #SexualHarassment or not but absolutely important to remember that it takes a whole lot of courage to come out, share personal experiences & name someone who is a predator, who assaults or exercises power through sexual innuendos. #MeToo
Many men/women were not able to say NO when they found themselves in an uncomfortable position not because they wanted it but because they simply froze. What is encouraging is to find the whole #MeToo debate going on led by young people who refuse to internalise sexual abuse
These #MeToo debates must lead to concrete actions. Office managements/HRs/ Newsroom Editors/ Owners cannot simply not act. Act against the guilty. HRs must Do more than organising Rangoli contests. Let an employee have courage to come forward to report #SexualHarassment

In a patriarchal society, women are taught self doubt, silence, to put up with shit. To assume that they will be able to say no to 1st sexual overture by a colleague/senior at work is unfair. Some cant afford to quit the job. (1/n) #Metoo
They put up with stalking, unwanted attention, nasty sexist behaviour for years on end knowing that not many will believe them when they complain. It is not a level playing field. Wish it was but apart from work hierarchies, there r gender hierarchies to conquer too. #MeToo (2/n)
To dismiss the trauma they put up with, sometimes months, yrs, decades till they find the courage to call it out as just as bad behaviour on part of men is a travesty. The harassment they face is sexual in nature. So we will have to call it sexual harassment. #Metoo (3/n)

Ok, here’s a test for all the purported “#sexpositive” “feminists”. Y’all despise “moralistic” views of sexuality, huh? You think sex should be commodified and prostitution should be a job like therapy or tutoring?
Why are we clutching our pearls over “#SexualHarassment”? Why even have this #MeToo shit? What makes sexual harassment any different or worse than all other forms of harassment? What makes grabbing pussies any worse than grabbing someone’s arm? And at that...
What’s wrong with some dude asking his intern to blow him? There’s nothing wrong with asking to make coffee or deliver papers. Isn’t it “just work”? #BlowJobsAreRealJobs, eh? And at that, if prostitution is fully decriminalized, some creep going around asking women to suck his

Just came off the streets after march and rally with hotel workers of @unitehere and #publicschool teachers @uesf who just earned a pay raise thru SF’s #YesOnG ballot campaign waged with @SFDemocrats @sflabor and @TeamPelosi. People are angry and scared about #Janus.... 1/thread Christine and SF teachers union leaders marching
We marched with hundreds of hotel workers of @unitehere who are in contract negotiations with massively lucrative #SF hotel chains that will not give their workers a contract with fair wages. Message: “One Job Should be Enough” It’s NOT - and #Janus makes their lives harder. 2/ Susie Christine Rafael marching
Both the hotel workers and the teachers said the same thing: Donald Trump’s #SCOTUS sided with corporate bosses over workers, first denying protections against #sexualharassment and today denying voices in the job in #Janus. By design, TRUMP’S COURT IS HURTING WORKING PEOPLE. 3/ Local 2 Hotel Workers Union and Teachers Union leaders speak at SF rally

Hi everyone! This is @sohni_c for @Smashboard_. One of the things I want to discuss today is how #sexualharassment and #sexualassault cases are reported in the media. The first issue is the tedious sensationalisation of these cases 1/n
Resulting in the focus remaining on the victim rather than the perpetrator. Hence, adding to stigma, shaming and victim-blaming of the women who face harassment and assault. Also, these attitudes result in reinforcing the #rapeculture where the victim is held at scrutiny. 2/n
Moreover, insensitive and sensational reportage serves to titillate and tease the erotic imagination of abuse, rape and violence. The focus shifts from the violation of the victim to the patriarchal fixation on women's bodies and their sexual freedom. 3/n

Good morning to you all! @saysnidhigoyal and @nidsitis are on their way to Dombivali for a workshop on sexual harassment and consent with hearing and speech impaired women. Join us as tweet some interesting observations from the training. #SexDis
@saysnidhigoyal @nidsitis We have begun with a quick recap of our previous workshop - outlining the topics covered. Including that fact that women have ovaries and get pregnant! The image has our trainer Sunita signing how long is pregnancy and the participants responding with 9 months.
Now discussing menstruation. Many of them are saying they get happy when the period is not coming - aren’t we all! But discussing the need for regular periods and does skipping a period mean pregnancy?

This week congress is grappling with sexual harassment among governmental officials. @SenGillibrand and @RepSpeier introduced the #MeTooCongress Act to address better training and accountability. But what about the sitting #SCOTUS judge accused by Anita Hill 26 yrs ago?
In 1991 Pres Bush (now dealing with his own accusations of #sexualharassment) nominated Clarence Thomas to fill Thurgood Marshall's seat on the Supreme Court.
Thomas' hearings went along without much controversy until a private interview by the FBI of Anita Hill was leaked to the press. Hearings were then reopened and Anita Hill, then a prof of law at the University of Oklahoma, was called to testify.

Most men that I know, men who respect women as equals, are shocked when allegations come out about people like #HarveyWeinstein, #BillCosby, #LouisCK. They are in shock when men they know are accused of sexually harassing or assaulting women. THREAD 1 #BelieveWomen #RWU #MeToo
Some men find it very hard to believe that these things are so common, because they would never DO those things. If I were a man and I hadn’t experienced harassment and inappropriate behavior multiple times, I would probably find it difficult to believe. 2 #MeToo #BelieveHer
I decided to share about what I’ve experienced, so that good men who respect women can start to understand that these things happen to women know they know, work with, are related to, and love, every day. Their friends, neighbors, coworkers, relatives. 3 #sexualharassment
