Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has released the public redacted bids submitted under its 12 TWh/year Zero Carbon Energy RFP. Going to sift through them today and provide some highlights. #procurement #cleanenergy #offshorewind #nuclear #hydro #solar
1/ Background: On July 31, 2018, DEEP issued the final RFP for Zero Carbon Energy, soliciting proposals for up to 12 TWh/year of qualified zero carbon energy and associated environmental attributes. Proposals were due September 14. dpuc.state.ct.us/DEEPEnergy.nsf…
2/ Background: Eligible resources included New England nuclear power generating facilities (i.e., Millstone and Seabrook), existing and incremental hydropower, zero carbon Class I resources (i.e., solar, onshore/offshore wind), and paired & co-located energy storage.

With legislation committing California to 100% carbon-free electricity sitting on Gov. Brown’s desk, I wanted to share a timely new peer-reviewed article out today in the journal, @Joule_CP: cell.com/joule/fulltext…
In the paper, @nsepulvedam, @FdeSisternes, Prof. Richard Lester and I use detailed power system modeling to identify strategies that lower the costs and increase the odds of reaching a zero-carbon electricity grid. Check out MIT News coverage of the paper: technologyreview.com/s/611987/how-c…
After ~1,000 cases covering possible future tech cost, regional diffs in renewables quality & demand, and different limits on CO2, our study consistently demonstrates the best way to zero out electricity emissions is to deploy a balanced mix of low-carbon electricity sources.

1/ Well, it's the first full week of the final month of the quarter. Know what that means? Time for my quarterly U.S. #Energy #Storage tweetstorm! As always, I'll be sharing highlights from WoodMackenzie P&R/ESA's report, the U.S. Energy Storage Monitor.
1a/ To be clear: WoodMackenzie Power & Renewables (P&R) is the new brand of the former GTM Research!
2/ Q2 2018 saw the U.S. market grow 42% QOQ to 61.8 MW! The behind-the-meter market accounted for 75% of MW deployed.

#KeralaFloods might hv an astral connection, as it is believed #Kerala d land of #vamana celebrates every yr #Onam around this time, Onam falls on d birth #constellation of vamana i.e #Shravana nakshtra in which we had d longest total lunar eclipse of this century on 27/28 July
Like at a personal level for one who is born or associated with shravana constellation or Nakshtra d #Eclipse affects individually similarly it affects a region in this case #kerala at a mundane level astrally on human affairs that runs across d southern belt of #westernghats
Also #Kerala is a land blessed by d #serpents & d reason for its fertility is directly related to d blessings bestowed by #Nagas on #Parasurama in a barren land infested with sea salt, hence not respecting d blessings by cutting down forests on large scale in d name of developmnt

1. Some banks may be re-investing in coal after promising not to do so, as @nytimes reported this week, but that doesn't mean #coal is coming back - not by a long shot. This THREAD explains why:
2. This new @nytimes report by @flitteronfraud shows that some banks are dragging their feet on moving #BeyondCoal even as the industry’s last legs continue to wobble: nyti.ms/2LDELkP
3. More than half of the coal plants in America have retired or committed to retire and, despite the Trump administrations ridiculous ploys, utilities are abandoning coal at roughly the same rate under this administration as they were under Obama: sierraclub.org/press-releases…

Thread) Well there you go: the Minerals Council of Australia rep #BHP, #RioTinto & #Glencore couldn't resist responding to the Kerry Schott's comments that the push for new #coal plants in Australia doesn't stack up financially #lignite #auspol
2) On an earlier thread I thought the MCA would duck for now & respond in the future - but the #coal lobby in Australia are getting desperate & can see how fast the case for new coal globally is collapsing. Desperate times breed desperate PR #auspol
3) There’s a few things worth noting about their latest media release – the MCA have opted to focus their criticism on Kerry Schott

I was about to head offline for 2 weeks, but I need to respond to this new paper from @ppchef before I go on whether #nuclear can operate flexibly. By coincidence, I just had a peer-reviewed article on this very subject accepted by Applied Energy by today! So here's a thread...
In this new "discussion paper," energy journalist @PPchef takes great pains to demonstrate that nuclear power is too inflexible to pair well with wind & solar in a "decarbonized energy system" & thus must be discarded "to make room" for more #wind & #solar publications.iass-potsdam.de/pubman/item/es…
I'm going to defer technical discussion of whether nuclear plants (old and new) can ramp or change output to match fluctuations in net demand and contribute to system reliability/flexibility until my paper is released (short answer: they certainly can if doing so is valuable)...

As clean renewable energy continues to grow at an unprecedented pace, the highest emitting countries are driving toward their #ParisAgreement commitments. In 2017, more than half of new electricity capacity in each of the top 4 carbon emitters came from #wind & #solar.
In China (28% of global emissions), wind + solar = 55% of new electricity capacity in 2017, according to @rhodium_group: bit.ly/2rOuD2K
In the United States (15% of global emissions), wind + solar = 62% of new electricity capacity in 2017, according to @BCSECleanEnergy & @BloombergNEF: bit.ly/235kHtT

1/ Quick take on the Trump tariff on imported solar cells is that people are going to lose their jobs. Simple Math: Tariffs increases solar costs. Higher costs means less solar. Less solar means fewer jobs. #Solar
2/ Trump country will lose out the most. Big growth in utility scale solar is in the Southeast, Texas and Southwest. All those Southeast solar markets will be hurt MORE by Trump tariffs because they are the most cost sensitive #Solar
3/ The regions of the country with high electricity prices like California and Massachusetts will be hurt but not as much as Trump country. CA and MA markets will see lower margins for developers but don't expect lots of cancellations. Still TBD. #solar

Apologies for anyone who follows me for non-#solar stuff. Here is a short thread on Why PV Analysis Should Stick to DC Capacity and Capacity Factor, And Only Use AC in Certain Rare Circumstances.
The Direct Current (DC) capacity of a PV plant is the power output of all its modules under standard conditions, incl. benchmark insolation of 1000W per square metre.

The alternating current (AC) capacity is that of the inverter, and is the max instantaneous power output.
A PV plant only operates near its DC rating for a few hours per day, (per year in Germany/ UK), AC capacity should often be lower than DC, by design. You don't need an inverter than can handle full theoretical output. The AC:DC ratio is called the 'inverter loading ratio', ILR.

1/ Manu (The progenitor of Humankind)
All different races of Mankind are derived from Manu and Shradha. The current Manu is Vaivasvata Manu.
2/ The word Manu literary means man but it is a title given to the progenitor of mankind. According to Hindu Puranas there are many kalpas (One day of Lord Brahma the creator) and each Kalpa has 14 manvantara and each manvatara has one manu. So basically each Kalpa has 14 Manus.
3/ The current manu of the present manvantara is Shraddhadeva or Vaivasvata Manu of this current Kalpa. He is the son of Vivasvat (Probably Surya) and is therefore also known as Manu-vaivasvata.
