(Thread) Earlier, I shared an old letter my grandpa wrote about the occupation of #Japan. The response was so overwhelming I searched for (& found) an interview with my grandma on the same subject.

Today, on the anniversary of the formal end of #WWII, I’ll share some excerpts:
(2/9) Some background on my grandmother first:
・Born/raised in Yokohama
・Before the war, family was well-to-do merchants, but the imperial gov’t took all their wealth for the war effort
・English speaker from young age
・Got a job as a switchboard operator for Occupation forces
(3/9) More background:
・”Met” my grandfather when he made a call through her switchboard
・Started their life together overcoming the legal & social taboos of their love
・She preferred to tell stories rather than write them down, so I transcribed our conversation 13 years ago

Thread: The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion – the first African American unit in the segregated US Army to come ashore on D-Day. #DDay
All films about the storming of Omaha Beach in France on June 6, 1944 don’t show any black soldiers. Most textbooks never mention them, but they were there, fighting against tyranny — all while dealing with it at home and in the military.
The 320th were charged with raising hydrogen-filled balloons over the beaches anchored to steel cables. Tucked under the 125-pound gasbags were small bombs .

Until the beaches were cleared, the 320th were infantry troops as well. Digging trenches and round up German troops.

#OTD in 1940, the #USSR began the second #WWII mass deportation of #Polish citizens from eastern Polish borderlands occupied by the Soviets on Sept.17, 1939. Polish civilians were deported by the USSR in four waves that occurred from Feb. 10, 1940 through mid-June 1941.
Each deportation had a distinctive character & targeted specific populations of Polish people in occupied eastern Poland. The deportation of April 13 targeted small farmers, tradesmen, civil servants, and the families of those who had been arrested or taken as POWs by the Soviets.
Many of those deported on April 13 were family members of the #Polish officers, policemen, and intelligentsia who were executed by the #USSR during the #Katyń massacre; roughly 80 percent of those included in this deportation were women and children. #WWII

Long before current traditions of #ValentinesDay sprang forth, spymasters worldwide have used the amorous arts to obtain secrets from their enemies. Known as “honey traps” or “honeypots,” rivals ensnared their adversaries in a game of love, lure, & lies.

One of the best known seductresses was Mata Hari, a Dutch exotic dancer convicted of spying for the Germans during WWI. She was accused of being a double agent & obtaining intel by seducing prominent French politicians & officers. She was tried, convicted & executed in 1917.
While most think of female temptresses when they hear the term "honey trap," men too have been used as honey traps to steal secrets. For example, in West Germany during the height of the Cold War.
