Hey twitter -

I'd like to take my regularly scheduled #SundaySoapbox and do a last minute swap to focus on Susan Collins.

Let me preface by reminding you I am not running against Susan at this time, but I do have an election in a month that I could use support for.

I am a constituent of Susan's. Ever since I have moved here I am astonished at how incredibly effective she is at harnessing people's hope and her words like a damn magician.

Though she is a consistent conservative vote, she is able to focus all eyes on her.

Let's be clear, Susan is a troll.

Susan is truly brilliant. Absolutely amazing. She captures the hearts and minds of moderates repeatedly despite pulling the football every time.

It's horrific for most constituents, and a blasphemy to representative government.

It's not very frequent that I comment on a presidential tweet, but this is not ok.

Sexual assault is traumatic. For many the thought of even admitting it has happened to them keeps them from reporting.

Then the worry about having to beg to be believed.

Then your family and community will look at you different.

Your behavior will be questioned, and even if you has zero responsibility, many will blame you for being a tease, wanting it, being irresponsible for choosing what should be a totally innocuous setting.

Since folks have posting yearbook photos, here is one of mine.

Take a moment to contemplate how many unwanted sexual advances and sexual assaults I had to fend off in the school-sanctioned athletic uniform.

Dear @SenatorCollins, You keep saying you’re hearing β€œnothing” from constituents about #Kavanaugh. I invite you to come back home and actually spend some time in #Maine- and see the incredible community fighting his nomination. 1/9
For someone who repeatedly promised Maine women you would protect our rights - and earning the @PPact endorsement - how do you explain the 76% of women who OPPOSE his nomination? 2/9
And why are you letting the White House papers - of his β€œmost formative years” (his words, not mine) not be released? Where’s the anger? 3/9

Hey #mepolitics, I found my inspiration for a #SundaySoapbox a day late. It's a holiday, right?

I had someone compare me to @BarackObama last week and minutes ago I had someone reference hope and change.

Let's talk about hope and change.
Change I'm all for, we'll get back to that.

Let's start with hope.

I have to confess, I don't love hope.

Hope...can be kind of a dick.

It teases you.

You *think* something maybe, kind of can happen.

If you just hope enough it'll be right?

It's probably my family law background.

Too many really lovely people hoping for their partner, child, parent, etc to be the person they could be if that partner, child, parent, etc if they only changed, which of course they have no desire and/or resources to do.

This is a surreal moment for someone who is attention-adverse.

Also, my license plate made the front page πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Ok, I just looked at the photos used. I am really frugal with sunglasses. I've managed to keep that same pair for around 15 years. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Hey #mepolitics - Ready for another round of #SeeMaineWithTiffany?

Who wants to guess where I was today?
There were many apples, a wagon ride and delighted bees.

The views were amazing!

I've been asked this a lot - what is the benefit of ranked choice voting?

If you feel like politics keeps pushing far left or far right as candidates differentiate, RCV lets you pick the moderate with the back-up of "not the other one".

I made you a chart.

Maybe you think of yourself as an independent, moderate, etc, and really don't love either party (but probably like one party less) - you can select me as your first choice, and still have the back up of another candidate if not enough people agree with you.
In this race, folks who like Bruce probably don't like Jared, folks who prefer Jared probably aren't keen on Bruce.

A lot of folks would like (or find less annoying) someone who really isn't a party. With RCV, you can do that! It removes the risk of vote-splitting.

Hey #mepolitics,

Ready for a #SundaySoapbox?

Let's talk about why more women don't run for office.

In my experience, it's about attention...positive and negative attention.

Let me share some.

Warning, there may be some words you don't like here. We censor the ugly too much.
I'm going to stick predominantly to my experience here so I'm not generalizing. I would hope in Maine local elections women experience less of this.

Let's start with the bad attention.

It is almost every day I get some form of negative attention, often lots.

Yesterday, a really nice person put a post about me on reddit.

It was unsolicited, but appreciated. My campaign runs on fans.

Unsolicited but perhaps less appreciated, this was the first comment.

Hey #mepolitics -

Ready for a #SundaySoapbox?

Tonight I'd like to discuss "career politicians", and how we should maybe rethink that term.

It gets treated like a bad phrase. We're doing it wrong.

I *want* people in politics to see legislation as a career. Let's discuss.
How do we treat careers if we are serious about them?

We strive for proficiency, keep up on continuing education and try to do a good job...even when no one else is looking, because it is satisfying to be competent and well-respected at your career.

#SundaySoapbox #mepolitics
I regularly hear people advocate for term limits. For some elected roles? Sure.

For Congress? No.

But whyyyyyyy? Won't it get out the crummy reps? No. It will get us *more* crummy reps that are crummier.

Huh? Let me explain.

#mepolitics, this is government-created child abuse.

It seems like no one in this race wants to talk about hard federal issues in current events, and instead the focus is almost entirely on Maine.

I love Maine, but this job requires both.

Let's talk about that for a minute.
If a candidate isn't proficient in a wide swath of day-to-day issues for the average rural Mainer, they shouldn't be in the race.

If they avoid discussing controversial national events that should be the business of Congress, they shouldn't be in the race either.

We're all used to candidates saying they will work tirelessly for you (which is bs, give me someone who confesses to wanting a nap).

It's right up there with "I will put <insert state> before any other issues"...which is also, wait for it, bs.

It is incredibly rare you will see me comment on a presidential tweet. I don't think it's a productive way to govern. However, messages like this are dangerous and do actual harm.

Which brings me to this #SundaySoapbox, the press.

It is absolutely acceptable to criticize the press for specific actions on a specific story (excluding information, using bad optics, bias, etc).

I do this all the time.

Let's have a chat #mepolitics.

While I was Downeast with my boys enjoying Milbridge and not being online there was a conversation about me it was interesting to read.

Rather than reply to all the tweets, I'll give you a #SundaySoapbox for #TWPSB.

Side note for those who have never run for office - super weird to read about yourself on twitter.

It's like being at your own funeral and sitting in on the after eulogy chatter by the shrimp dip.

The way my head works may never be gratifying or specific in the ways @ASFried is looking for. I think it may one day work for @CollinsWatch, though I would imagine I would have much less exciting material than Susan.

I do believe it will work for Maine.

Hey #mepolitics,

Last week, many of you received @RepPoliquin's letter discussing an award for his work on behalf of seniors from some unnamed group.

Skipping the award, let's discuss Bruce, balanced budgets, tax cuts, social security and medicare spending...and math.
Bruce loves a balanced budget. He's been pushing it for a while. A balanced budget requires you to not spend more than you bring in.

Makes sense, right?

Bruce also voted for the tax code change in December, remember?

My workday is often punctuated while I am waiting for others, like now. I'm going through the affidavits filed last week in border cases.

This is abuse.

Of children.

Of adults.

By government.

If we choose as policy to keep people in detention, we have standards.

Trust me, you never know when you might be the one who ends up detained. You *want* a minimum standard that is humane.

Let's do a few screen shots while I'm stuck in this hallway.

Imagine no hygiene items. This isn't just you don't feel well so maybe you don't brush your teeth for a couple of days to spare your gag reflex.

If you haven't been a woman who has been at least 10 hours over needing a tampon, ask one how that feels.

Where is everyone going for #OpenFarmDay?

There are around 100 farms across #Maine participating in the 29th annual event. Support #smallbusiness and agriculture by coming out!…
Very first farm in the #OpenFarmDay brochure has...a winery. Somone want to tell @Governor_LePage that we should be exporting wines as well as importing them?

So much fun on #OpenFarmDay!

Our first stop was From The Country Farm. No online ordering, but you should absolutely do a #MaineRaising with a phone order. Amazing soaps, lotions and goat cheese.

Hey #mepolitics, want to talk about carbon tax?

Bruce thinks it is an "extreme" policy. I think that's a bit of a cop-out.

Without even needing to get into whether or not we caused climate change (spoiler, we did), we need to have comprehensive options to adapt to it.
Those options may include a carbon tax, which isn't particularly extreme or novel. We'll have to come at it from several angles to be most effective.

Extreme would be something like "let's ban all cars today!" Clearly impractical.

Novel might be something like feeding seaweed to cows. (Which actually sounds pretty cool, plus we have cows and seaweed here, so industry leader for the win!)…

Hey @TwitterGov, @TwitterSupport, @jack -

I've been ballot-qualified for over 45 days, 12 days longer than this Maine candidate, with more than 34x the followers, much more content to twitter, and with at least as good of odds to win as Mark.

Where is my candidate designation?
So we clearly aren't going for chronological order. Huh. 😐
You know what's super weird #mepolitics? The two GOP challengers, both total long shots, have gotten their tags.

The Independents in our federal races (who qualified before anyone), not.

The @MaineDems challengers, also not.

Why @twitter, @TwitterGov, @jack, @TwitterSupport?

It seems like perhaps the candidates have been waffle-y or a bit unclear on this.

Russia never stopped having a cold war with us.

Maybe you don't remember getting under your desk in drills? (as if a desk would stop a bomb) I'm old like that.

Russia is not an ally.

This is not a partisan issue. This is a patriot issue.

We should never lose sight that there is one country on this planet more than any other that would love nothing more than to disrupt our peace, destroy our trade relations, and decimate our economy.

We are not friends.

We are not frenemies.

They are directly, actively at war with our nation and have been for decades.

It is a congressional duty to be aware of such enemies engaging in active hostile acts and behave accordingly.

Let me tell you about @MomsDemand. I do think that @shannonrwatts is probably to the left of me, and likely the org as well.

When I first received the questionnaire I figured it was like all of the others that I would not be able to answer.

I'm a pretty firmly #2A girl, in a very #2A world.

The questions were...sensible, balanced, not extreme. I was able to asnwer everything with a couple of hand-written notes about proper wording and making sure things were not too intrusive.

Be open to the possibility that stump speeches aside on either side, there are actually some areas where both would find a palatable solution. :)

So weird that there isn't a bill number or text, right?

I guess we have to go play go (lobster) fish!

#mepolitics #Readthebill
To do this we look up the bills in front of the house today. It looks like #HR200/#HR965. Alas, neither have today's activity so we wait.

Side note - #HR985 looks like the Sec. of the Interior might be getting ready to sell things we don't want sold. 😯

#mepolitics #Readthebill

We're starting to get blue's clues here, but on quick glance I don't see much here other than the word "lobster" on two pages in this document; lobster defined and page 103 which doesn't say much about what Bruce said.

What do I need money for?

That same $10 could buy a struggling family a meal, and if enough people believe that is a more productive use of their money, I will be on the news and don't need ads.

(Plus it's improving lives instead of annoying people)

While we are talking about opportunity costs, that same $10 could help someone find a Maine business they love, and help a small business land a new client.

Who needs postcards when you can help them grow their business? Wouldn't you rather get this than a flyer?

Millions of dollars are wasted every year with folks selling you a political product they can't deliver that you don't really want anyway.

Let's get back to basics.

Be honest.

Be reasonable.

Do the job well for fair pay.

Help people.

Leave the BS behind.
