β€œWe cannot continue to squabble to find ad-hoc solutions each time a new ship arrives.”
During #SOTEU, President @JunckerEU proposed:
β€’ A reinforced European Union Agency for Asylum
β€’ A fully equipped #EUBorderGuard
β€’ Stronger EU rules on return
β€’ Legal migration
#MigrationEU
We are proposing to equip the #EUBorderGuard with the operational capacity and powers needed to effectively support Member States on the ground.
The new standing corps of 10,000 operational staff will ensure that the EU has the necessary capabilities in place.

Sea arrivals in #Spain are increasing.
But the closure of a #migration route doesn't mean that automatically migrants just move to a different one. There is little evidence of a 'route replacement' trend.
#migrationEU
This is an important reminder that 'immigration policies' can affect migration flows but are hardly the only factor at play. The drivers of #migration are multiple and can't be reduce to the political will 'at destination'.
There is an overall and significant decrease in sea arrivals, which should be a warning for everyone still using the word 'migration crisis', but this is not the case, see newint.org/features/web-e… #Salvini #Italy

Time for a brief recap of the role of #NGO-s doing #SAR operations in the Central Mediterranean? πŸ‘‡
First: PERCEPTIONS MATTER. πŸ“ΊπŸ€”

Irregular sea arrivals to Italy are WAY down, and continue to be (-78% y-o-y), even as NGOs carried out over 40% of SAR operations in 2017 and 2018.
Still, 51% of Italians believe flows are as high or higher than last year's.πŸ‘‡
Second: DETERRENCE VS NGOs does not pay off (much).πŸš’β›”οΈπŸ“‰

Over the last two weeks of the new goverment's "deterring measures", the decline in sea arrivals vs 2017 is broadly in line with the drop experienced since July 2017. With or without #Aquarius and #Lifeline arrivals. πŸ‘‡

2) A total of $50m was funneled. And it wasn't done via wire transfer. Franco-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takkiedine claims he carried suitcases full of cash in 2006 and 2007.

$50m is double the legal campaign limit in France.
