2/ Cyrene (in the town of Shahat) is just a stunning place.
Luckily ISIS/Qaeda never reached it but were kept near to Derna, around 60 km to the east. Nothing in Cyrene was vandalized.
The tribe of Shahhat protects this historic site.

3/ These days Cyrene is open to the public.
Not a lot of foreign visitors due to Libya's problems but many local people visit it.
I wouldn't say it was crowded but I saw around 100 visitors in one afternoon.

#Libya While all eyes were focusing on Tripoli over the past two weeks due to militia clashes, ceasefires and yesterday's terrorist attack on the NOC, the LNA was tacitly preparing for a military escalation in central and south-western Libya, with immense potential ramifications
The instability in Tripoli served Haftar in several ways: 1) By highlighting the weakness of Serraj's GNA/PC and compounding shortages in water & electricity etc. the instability in Tripoli eroded what little popular support remained for a GNA/PC leadership despised by Haftar
2) The attack on Tripoli started by the Kani Brigade created a new push for political and fiscal reforms of the GNA similar to those Haftar demanded after the oil terminal stand-off ended in July but which since then lost momentum in August as the GNA and the Central Bank stalled

Benghazi was center of Libyan uprising in 2011. After Gaddafi’s fall, extremists took advantage of the chaos.
From 2012-2014 Al-Qaeda +ISIS linked groups started reign of terror in Benghazi +Derna.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
