One reason I am hype about #PoorPeoplesCampaign is that they refuse to only rally around one cause. They stand for #BlackLivesMatter, #IdleNoMore, AND #AsylumSeekers. We need movements that seek righteous justice for everything, not just the palatable people.
Even as it is a good thing that today people gathered all over the country: ask yourself why Senators and members of Congress weren’t showing up at Black Lives Matter rallies with the same urgency. Ask yourself if you ever thought to.
If your response is, “Well I’m here now!” then my challenge to you is, “are you ready to fight mass incarceration — which is a major cause of family separations — with the same vigor?”

As a fmr immigration attorney let me be unambiguously clear. Crossing a boarder to claim asylum is *not* a crime; no under US or international law. Any child separated from a parent under that pretext is done so in direct contravention to the laws of the USA. ⚖ THREAD Pls RT.
If you came to the US without permission to apply for asylum, youmetjod of entry, whether legal or illegal *should* in no way effect your application process. Illegal entry is not a ground of inadmissibility for asylum applicants.
Unlike many other categories of applicants for immigration benefits, ppl seeking asylum in the US are not barred by having made an illegal entry; for example, sneaked across the U.S. border or overstaying a valid visa (one of the top ways people are in the country illegall).

People fleeing violence should be allowed to follow the legal process to apply for #Asylum.

Instead, they are jailed & separated from their children, sometimes thousands of miles apart.

Asylum-seekers in Texas are currently being stopped by border patrol before they can ask for asylum. This policy, as well as the separation of asylum-seeking kids from parents, is a VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL LAW. From @TexasMonthly: texasmonthly.com/politics/immig… (h/t @_karenjgonzalez)
I've had several people ask, so here's an in-depth thread about how this new policy violates international law: In 1948, after World War II, the US and several other countries signed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. un.org/en/universal-d…
After WWII, we as a country (including my grandfather, a WWII vet) felt we could never allow human rights to be violated as they had been under Hitler; they were concerned about the thousands of refugees in Europe as well as the millions of people slaughtered in the Holocaust.
