This is probably the most common argument heard from gun advocates. It’s true that guns can’t kill by themselves & DO indeed need someone to pull the trigger... Guns don’t kill people, but allow someone who WOULD kill much easier, faster, more lethal means for killing. #GunReform

For the record, I do not think we need to ban all guns, or repeal 2A. We can pass effective and sensible #GunReform without being extreme.
But it is clear that more firearm laws equals less death by firearms. Those of us that are advocating for #GunReform need to get on the same page, be sending the same message. So let’s come up with some aspects that we can all agree on.

Statistically, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims of violence than commit violence. To reduce gun violence, we must address availability of #guns & complex cultural issues. We can't focus on the molehill when the mountain's right there. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
We also unfairly overburden psychiatric professionals by making them responsible & accountable for preventing gun crime. Gun violence still disproportionately harms communities of color, & our failure to invest in social and physical infrastructure perpetuates the cycle.
Our most common psychiatric diagnoses (depressive, anxiety, & attention-deficit disordres) have no correlation w/violence. While I agree w/having trained mental health professionals in schools, that won't stop gun violence. We must change our culture. #NeverAgain #GunReformNow
I want to throw out a couple of thoughts I have about the mis-use of the term 'progressive' as a euphemism for 'liberal'. I've addressed this in public talks before but never put them to written media and would like feedback.
During the run up to the Iraq war and later, during #Occupy, I always considered myself a liberal, since that was the derisive term used by Rush, Hannity and others that I fundamentally disagreed with. It was a label I wore with pride.
I'm not sure exactly when "progressive" entered my lexicon - it was probably during the @BernieSanders campaign, and it seemed like every "liberal" politician was using the word to describe their positions.

Statistically, in the US a shooting incident takes place every 60 hours. We are down to hours in between shootings. Not days, weeks, months or years. It’s HOURS.
Every day in the US, 96 people die from gun violence & 222 people are shot but survive.

Australia, had 4 mass shootings between 1987–1996. After 1996, It took Parliament just 12 days to pass stricter gun laws. They haven’t had a mass shooting since. It’s been 34 days since Parkland.

Establish age, mental-health, and registration prerequisites to ownership: Set minimum ownership age to 21 for all weapons except shotguns, which can be purchased at 18. All owners must pass ATF-designed mental-health exam with a locally-designated physician prior to purchase.
For handgun ownership, this must be repeatedly yearly. All owners of handguns must register ownership annually and meet all prerequisites at the time of registration. All sellers must register as dealers annually.
Sooo... CNN released poll data a few hours ago that is pretty damn remarkable, and it's worth noting the highlights.
First: in just 4 months, Americans favoring "stricter gun control laws" has sharply risen: 52% to a whopping 70%. That's astounding.

2. This is the first time in more than 20 years of this particular polling question that a plurality of Americans have an unfavorable view of @NRA.
3. Moreover, of the mere 26% of Americans who oppose "stricter gun controls", nearly half of those (12%) only "moderately oppose" them. Only 14% of Americans have a "strong" opposition to gun control.
The #NRA is a powerful functioning arms industry #lobby masquerading as a 501(c)4 #nonprofit membership organization, claiming to educate the public about the interests of its members. Here’s why we need to stop this lie and strip it of nonprofit status:
If you do the math, with 5 million members x $40 annual dues, the #NRA should have an annual budget of about $200 million dollars as a membership organization.
However, the NRA'S total budget was over $400 million in 2016 because more than half of its budget comes from individual and corporate contributions and selling advertising in publications and events.

While we were watching the horror of the #ParklandShooting unfold, #AZLeg House Judiciary Comm's GOP members passed HB2535, @kevinpayneLD21's bill that'd PROHIBIT all child welfare agencies from adopting or enforcing any rule or policy related to possession or storage of a gun. 
In the same breath, Rep. Payne declares that the AZ Department of Child Safety's "primary purpose is to protect children" and that DCS should not maintain the ability to protect children from firearms. These seem like ideas completely at odds w each other, no? 
Because we know that, during the first six months of 2017, for example, minors died from accidental shootings at a pace of one every other day, with the majority of the shootings occurring in the home. usatoday.com/story/news/201…
