UK govt claims it wants an EU "deal", with a few weeks left. So, the Foreign Sec compares the EU to a Soviet prison, dashing hopes that the insults of his predecessor will now be replaced by moderation and alienating EU members UK badly needs on side. /1 theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/o…
Today, the Prime Minister doubles down by trying to focus attention on the new post-Brexit migration policy. In doing so, she proudly announces on #r4today that free movement will end. This alone is being blind to the fact that it means no more movt for Brits (if they care?) /2
Insisting on the end of FOM also says to the EU explicitly that their citizens will no longer be able to come to the UK because the UK wants 'high skilled only'. Ergo, EU workers are low-skilled and therefore undesirable. /3

The truth about Brexit, the "EU is punishing us" narrative & what "no deal" actually means... (1/19)

The EU isn't punishing the UK for Brexit. We are punishing ourselves. Losing all the benefits of EU membership IS punishment. Just like no longer being able to use the fitness equipment or the weights is punishment for quitting the local gym. 2/19
You might well put on weight because you cancelled your gym membership. But you wouldn't turn around and say "Hey, the gym's punishing me for leaving by making me fat!" That's the consequence of losing your gym membership, not the fault of the gym. 3/19

Discussing contingency planning on #r4today, @DominicRaab persisted with the lie that a No-Deal “will affect the EU as much, if not more in some areas, as they will affect us”.

Name some of those areas, please, Mr Raab or perhaps @DExEUgov. I am really curious.
We’re not talking about loss of trade, but about disruption of critical supply chains and a regulatory void. Name an area, like medicines, in which EU face disruption to supply. Name an area, like aviation, in which EU step into a similar legislative abyss. @DominicRaab @DExEUgov
Isn’t it high time you cut the lies and stopped peddling the notion that facing tariffs on a few products representing 3% of trade to the EU is equilibrant to food shortages or grounded planes or hospitals running out of insulin? @DominicRaab @DExEUgov

.@BarryGardiner effectively saying on #r4today that we have to trash our country with Brexit to stop right-wing xenophobes from rioting. FFS.

What is the point of @UKLabour? Absolute joke.
Perhaps @BarryGardiner needs reminding of the way that decent British people deal with fascists: we don’t cower and let them get their way, we fight them and their ugly, racist, xenophobic ideology.

Brexit: New EU referendum vote could spark ‘civil disobedience’, says Labour's @BarryGardiner.

Remember when Labour’s front bench wasn’t occupied by fascist-appeasers?

Still, at least the members who put them there get to sing a song about the leader.

I am sorry I have to put my poor followers through this. But if similar nonsense is said on #r4today it takes a bit of a correction (thread)
1) First things first: the Withdrawal Agreement. During the transition period we all hope that things will continue as they are now. Including EU FTAs. That is not unlikely, but not guaranteed. Why is it not guaranteed?
2) EU FTAs are treaties between the EU, generally also its member states (they are mixed agreements, all but two of them, soon three, I’ll spare you the details) and a third state.

My dream Today Programme...

Presenters: Mishal Husain, Carolyn Quinn, Eddie Mair
Editor: Alistair Burnett

- relax format scaffold, eg 0810 not *always* combative i/v, 0820 not always ‘fun’, 0840 not always ‘debate’
- drop religion

That’d get me listening again #r4today
... also:
- no thought for day. It’s a news, not beliefs, programme
- reduce blocks of sport and business. If there’s important stuff, it bubbles up into main prog anyway.
- have some longer-form packages with expert reporters providing more insight and depth on a story
...and most of all build an investigate reporting team. The Today programme has long given up on leading the news agenda, beyond a clip from the 0810 interviewee about a story from yesterday’s papers or today’s official line from government. Needs to get its mojo back.

It's a criminal offence to falsifying a legal instrument. But if the #MetPolice / #LBRUT do it, then there is not even an investigation. 12 years of silence. Evidence to prove it - ukcoverup.com/search-warrant-

Welcome to the #Metpolice who also changed & falsified my arrest details. Have a look at the evidence here ukcoverup.com/arrest-details as it's all easy to prove & that's why it's never addressed

On UK trade arrangements after Brexit, we need more clarity from the Govt. on SERVICES, in which UK is leader (both financial & non-financial services). Chequers plan focuses on goods #R4Today @MishalHusainBBC 1/5
EU accounts for more than 35% of UK's services exports (> share exported to US). This vastly exceeds the shares of the smaller economies (Oz etc.) with which UK is seeking post-Brexit trade deals #R4Today 2/5
The majority of the UK's services exports are in non-financial services (approx. 70%+). That's legal services, media, architecture, tech etc which provide good & mostly well-paid jobs. These services exports are growing (c. @ONS) #R4Today 3/5

Oh gods I'm listening to #r4today and I've got to stop what I'm doing every 30 seconds and laugh hysterically.
The parade of increasingly baffled and performativley patient EU diplomats is killing me.
Allow me to translate: "Do you need me say it louder and more slowly? We have the upper hand, our position hasn't changed, but we sure are entertained by this shitshow."

Extraordinary performance from John Humphrys, interviewing Keir Starmer after resignation of the Cabinet Minister in charge of Brexit. Spluttering, hectoring, making it about Labour, suggesting the resignation is no big deal as Brexit policy is run from No10 anyway. #r4today
For balance, Nick Robinson should now be interviewing Jeremy Hunt *equally* aggressively about the Davis resignation and govt Brexit policy. But no, he’s respectfully putting a contrary point of view, letting him put his case and not talking over him. #r4today #HumphrysMustGo

I’d put it slightly differently - an example being @bernardjenkin on #r4today just now. It’s a failure to front up honestly to the trade dilemma and the Irish trilemma.
The trade dilemma is the choice between (1) frictionless trade - but also eg data transfers, continued EHIC cards, to select at random 2 advantages of EU membership Brexiters promised we’d keep - and (2) being free of EU/EEA rules/enforcement. You can’t have both.
Jenkin was honest about the choice but rather less forthcoming about the huge short run consequences of choice (2): disrupted complex supply chains/car production moving/food exports disrupted/no more benefits such as EHIC.

Oh dear. Right questions for @OwenPaterson on Today on car manufacturers and no deal should have focused on (inevitable given WTO MFN rules) 10% EU tariffs and disruption to complex manufacturing supply chains crossing Channel many times on just in time basis.
Instead he was allowed to dodge key issue by concentrating on U.K. tariffs and sales of finished cars. #r4today.
Reminder: if #r4today journalists want help in preparing to interview on these issues, many experts around who are happy to help.

1/ I see Helen Belcher played ‘what are the silly women worried about’ card on #r4today with respect to sex-segregated spaces. (To be swapped seamlessly with ‘trans women are IN TERRIBLE DANGER’). Equalities law already exists to protect women at risk! Three problems with that:
2/ A. The GRA already seems to imply legal change of ‘sex’ in places so interaction with Equalities Act is unclear, even to lawyers. B. To invoke the EA, an organisation might well have to be prepared to go to court, and few can afford either the money or the publicity..
3/ Which means that C. growing number of organisations have decided already to ignore safeguarding responsibilities and lift same sex protections. Just because law is in theory there doesn’t mean it gets used.

Where does the north start? Tune in to #r4today tomorrow for a full discussion from @getnorth2018 where @MishalHusainBBC will be presenting from. Here's what @profmarktj thinks... "My map is a northern area defined as being ‘not London’, outside London’s sphere of influence"
@getnorth2018 @MishalHusainBBC @profmarktj .@profmarktj also said: "There are several ways you could define a northern region, including “the post-industrial north” or the “north eastern peripheral region” – but perhaps the most pertinent question is where does London end? 1/2

‘Jacob Rees-Mogg to fling fish from trawler on Thames in protest for fishermen 'betrayed' by May's Brexit deal’

I want my country back 🤦🏼‍♂️

Retweeted by a Brexiter who possibly thinks I’m being pro-JRM. Worrying.
Jacob Rees Mogg: “I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ.”

*Jacob flings dead fish into the Thames in protest at Brexit transition deal*

Hmm. Didn’t Jesus magic up lots of fish to feed the poor? Jacob screws the poor, then throws their dinner in the river. How very Christian.

Oh my God- John Humphrys just concluded a Brexit-focused interview with the (very courteous) Swedish ambassador by asking him, “And what’s the risk that after Brexit in Sweden you’ll end us speaking German instead of English as your 2nd language?” BrexitShambles #r4today
Shocked, angry & embarrassed about what John Humphrys just asked the Swedish ambassador on #r4today. To think he started the interview asking him about the supposed theme of Boris Johnson’s speech today: Britain as a global, outward-facing country.
What is even behind this question if not a pathetic cartoon-villain image of Germany seeking to dominate its neighbours & disrespect for Sweden & other proud EU countries? If this is picked up in abroad it’s going to damage their view of the UK even more.

The call for “positive thinking” is increasingly being used by politicians and journalists to shut down proper discussion of Brexit. 1/?
“Be positive” is posited as an alternative to “be informed” or “be smart” about this. 2/
interview with exporter on #r4today this morning was classic example of this. 3/
