Thread: Last night's #seatac plane hijacking was a bit of a rare, outsize reminder of why @Twitter has such an enormous responsibility to police what appears on its platform because of how it has altered entirely how people consume news & opinion.
As the #seatac hijacking unfolded, people on the ground were posting video of the plane in the air, the fighter jets chasing it, and audio of the mechanic's communication with air traffic control.
Even if the media were monitoring police/emergency comms and/or Twitter, it takes time to assign a crew, assess the situation, and get that info verified and ready for publication/broadcast. Twitter users were already on the story and reporting live, essentially.

My suicide plan was to steal a bunch of narcotics and anti-emetics, go to the beach, and swim out into the Gulf until either the drugs overtook me or I became exhausted and drowned. Then if I was "rescued" they wouldn't realize I was dying from overdose until its too late #SeaTac
I no longer work at a job where stealing a lethal amount of narcotics would be easy and I don't want to die, but sometimes I stand on the beach and wonder if it would have been the drugs or the water that would have taken me.
I was in a bad place and no one knew. I couldn't ask for help, I didn't know how. People helped me, they just didn't know it. A kind smile, a generous moment of understanding, that gave me hope that maybe there was something to live for.

America we need to talk about the #SeaTac highjacker and how we discuss mental illness in relation to actions.
Please remember that mental illness is NOT an excuse for actions that harm or threaten the safety of others.
A thread by someone who with mental illness.
Now before you all jump in here and screech about how I am attacking mental illness and demonizing it --- no. Not at all.
Mental illness twists your mind, it twists your reality in many, many ways. We need better mental health access in America. Hands. Down.
We need to have more dialogues about it. Not just in times of chaos -- like now, but on an average Thursday.
But what I do need is for everyone to please stop using mental illness as a blanket reason for actions that harm or endanger other people.

The #SeaTac highjacker is the perfect example of how we handle narratives of mental health. Only a white man who jacked a fucking plane, took off and flew it over Tacoma/the sound would be eulogized in essays on mental illness.
The #SeaTac highjacker is an example of how only white people are allowed to suffer from mental illness and have that be the core narrative of their meltdowns, of their failures, of their actions. People of color are never allowed to be mentally ill, just monsters.
If a man of color had done this--- and if this man turns out to be a PoC, the narrative around this meltdown will transform overnight. We will stop talking about mental illness and suddenly try to identify the "true reason" for his actions, scrapping through his life history.

Tonight, an apparently suicidal man named Rich stole a Horizon Air Q400 turboprop from #SeaTac, and took off without clearance.

What follows is a transcript of the last ~20 minutes of the transmissions between Rich, an unnamed controller, and a pilot named “Captain Bill”:

1/23
The broadcast was a jumble of chatter, so where you see […], some time elapses before the next transmission.

ATC: Turn back around so we can stay in contact.

2/23
Rich: I’ve got a lot of people that care about me…and…it’s gonna disappoint them to hear that I did this. I would like to apologize to each and every one of them. I’m…just a broken guy. Got a few screws loose, I guess. Never really knew it ‘til now. Um…just, you know…

After listening to the entire #SeaTac recording, a humble prediction (of which I'm certain): 1) Many will express sadness and comment on the good-natured disposition of the guy; 2) Those observations will be castigated as examples of white privilege, racism, and hypocrisy.
The unfortunate and bizarre actions and demise of this obviously-troubled young man will become yet another social justice bone to fight over. @donlemon will ask, "What would they be saying if this was a Muslim - or someone with a foreign accent, or a person of color?"
@brianstelter will talk about it on his Sunday show. He'll note the empathy of the Twitterverse, the lack of emergency statements/tweets from Trump and the WH, and ask how much different this would be if the man wasn't white. If he wasn't shot down, he (and others) will ask why.

BREAKING [Recap via @kurtsiegelin]:
-An airline employee [mechanic?] stole a plane at #SeaTac and took off alone
-Radio excerpts [below] hint that he didn't know what he was doing, but he got airborne
-2 F15s scrambled from Oregon Natl Guard, intercept
-Plane goes down
“Nah, I mean I don’t need that much help; I’ve played some video games before. I would like to figure out how to get this…make it pressurized or something so I’m not so lightheaded…”

Here’s Alaska Airlines’s homepage right now (Alaska owns Horizon). The blog they reference is blog.alaskaair.com/alaska-airline…
Btw, the plane was a Bombardier Q400 (holds 76) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardie…
(I’m a bit of an aviation nerd/lover. Who is also terrified of flying (ironically?) yet does it anyway, grudgingly :) )

Some dude stole a plane from #Seatac (Allegedly), did a loop-the-loop, ALMOST crashed into #ChambersBay, then crossed in front of our party, chased by fighter jets and subsequently crashed. Weird times.
This upstaged my brother’s wedding rehearsal. Wish them a happy wedding day tomorrow!

@SeaTacAirport Your security checkpoint policy really sucks. Only one general point open with a 1 hour wait?! Clearly a ploy to get folks to buy TSA PRE or CLEAR. Why only have one general checkpoint open for such a huge airport?!
@SeaTacAirport Great placement of these signs too guys. There's a 500 person line here, and disabled and elderly folks and kids. All crammed in to this one checkpoint that stretches the entire airport now. Cc: @AirlineFlyer @RunwayGirl #seatac
@SeaTacAirport This is from two completely opposite views, 180 degrees apart. Every single person in each of those pictures is in a single security queue. It's got that football game vibe going. 👍 #seatac
