This week, Ss consider the voices & perspectives that may be missing from texts like The Things They Carried, starting w/some reflection that considers the voices & perspectives they center in their own lives and who Oā€™Brien centers in the text... #DisruptTexts #aplangchat 1/

Ss who pass by #room290 will see models of writers with their notebooks! TY to my #pawlp @writingproject colleague @RealBrianKelley for these amazing visuals (and as you can see, I still got some space left! *hint hint*) #teachwriting #aplangchat #mentortexts šŸ˜‰
And @RealBrianKelley, if you're taking requests, I think @mindykaling would make a fine addition to this collection. :) hellogiggles.com/reviews-coveraā€¦

Day 4: Today Ss shared personal essays of introduction. Iā€™ve been doing this for years, yet I am always touched, surprised, & humbled at the beautiful words Ss are willing to share aloud w/ their peers. Reminds me what a privilege it is to work w/young people. #aplangchat
Among the many things they wrote about and shared... one Ss wrote about how he decided to take on beekeeping this past year! Another wrote of his collection of campaign buttons dating back to 1896. Another reflected on how her family has dinner together every single night.
From one Ss essay: ā€œYet these moments do not make me feel inferior or silent. Instead, they empower me to make a splash. The moment you change yourself to avoid criticism, you feed into bigotry. You let hate win. So Iā€™m determined to never lose. Stay gorgeous.ā€ ā¤ļø #aplangchat

I'm making new wall art for my classroom and would love to feature lines of poetry that inspire/provoke. Anything beautiful that Ss might love seeing on the wals, and if possible, POC writers. Please share your favorites! :) #TeachLivingPoets #aplitchat #aplangchat #engchat
This one will definitely be hanging up in my classroom:

We are each other's harvest;
we are each other's business;
we are each other's magnitude and bond.

"Expanding the canon isnā€™t only abt creating a culture in schools where SOC see people who look like them represented... but also de-centering whiteness so that all Ss have expanded perceptions of the intellectual legacies of POC" #DisruptTexts longviewoneducation.org/beyond-champioā€¦ @doxtdatorb
We "need to talk about how systemic racism and intergenerational poverty ā€“ not lack of passions ā€“ force too many people to ā€˜keep getting byā€™. Mindset doesnā€™t beat structure." Such an excellent pt, @doxtdatorb. /1
In one of my classes, we study commencement speeches. One of the most popular among Ss is Job's "Do What You Love" address. Message really resonates, I think, bc Ss feel pressured into following a specific "mold" (esp. as high achievers) /2 #aplangchat news.stanford.edu/2005/06/14/jobā€¦
