More than 4 years after it started, I often hear people ask what #GamerGate is, and many around them won't know, either. I’ve been part of GamerGate since August 2014, so I can provide a summary of it. 1/
An anti-gamer bias was present in the media long before GamerGate, with Grand Theft Auto being blamed for mass shootings, and gamers being called "entitled" for disliking the poorly rebooted DmC. The strongest anti-gamer stance was taken by journalists at gaming publications 2/
like Kotaku, Polygon, Ars Technica, Gamasutra, among others. No one expected gaming outlets to bear so much hatred toward video game culture when Eron Gjoni's famous blog post went public. Eron described his struggle with his then girlfriend, Zoe Quinn, who had gaslighted him 3/

3.) The tl;dr-- Trevor is a violent racist, he carries a concealed handgun and knife to protests, he's been arrested for pulling a gun on a protester, and he's a believer in "MGTOW," which the @SPLCenter has classed as a "hateful ideology advocating for the subjugtion of women."

Gamers learned that none of these blogs (they're bloggers, folks, not journalists) care about "journalistic ethics" codes. They care about bad PR that affects their brand or bottom line.
Since IGN fired the guy, sufficient bad PR was clearly generated.

I would hesitate to say "IGN did the ethical thing" or other platitudes like that. IGN reacted to public pressure.
Blogs have two options to deal with scandals: damage control, or addressing it head on. Most choose the former, because SocJus is a PR racket. IGN chose the latter.

Back in the days of Operation Disrespectful Nod, some softhearted people thought that getting the Society for Professional Journalism involved with their quest for ethical game journalism would have some kind of positive effect.

I accidentally ran across various and sundry bots while searching on the #GamerGate hashtag, so here's a quick thread.
Searching the most recent 10 days worth of #GamerGate tweets for accounts that tweet 24/7 and have used the hashtag more than once in that timespan yields 20 accounts.
This table shows the apps/services used to post the automated tweets to these accounts. Cheap Bots Done Quick and twittbot are both services where one can configure one's own Twitter bot; we will likely look at these in more detail later.
1) @mombot @stillgray @GamingAndPandas @LunarArchivist @kukuruyo @Grummz @guscraw I have this pet theory that Zoe Quinn is ultimately responsible for Trump winning the presidency. Not singlehandedly, but she was the lynchpin. And this may also have led to Brexit as well.
2) So let's start with the basics. Zoe makes a twine thingy, 'Depression Quest'. Not much of a game, but it isn't absolute garbage either - just a forgettable VN. She releases it, and predictably, nothing happens. Until suddenly, it receives rave reviews.
3) Gamers are intrigued. The indie scene was really coming into its own around this time period, so they assumed this was another gem by a creative developer. And thus, sales of the game got boosted, by people wanting to see what all the fuss was about.
