The relentlessness of passing over superb women with strong credentials & election histories in favor of whatever man is a headline at a moment is exhausting.

Two months ago it was Avenatti. Now it's O'Rourke.

Bypassing the majority of Americans--women--is a national disgrace.
O'Rourke is fine. He is not, Harris, Gillibrand or Klobuchar.

▪Gillibrand is Congress' leader on women's rights & sexual assault victims.
▪Harris set NN2018 on fire with her speeches reclaiming identity politics.
▪ Klobuchar highlighted #Kavanaugh's unfitness for SCOTUS.
Americans MUST stop looking past women to find some man, any man to supplant them.

It took THIRTY YEARS of incredibly hard work for @HillaryClinton to get to run for POTUS. The rules for women are so different. No one sees a woman give a single speech and says "president!"

Leonard Leo picked Kavanaugh.
Leonard Leo is a member of the Council for National Policy.
Wanna know some other members? Kellyanne Conway, Steve Bannon, Wayne LaPierre, David Keene, Ken Blackwell, Erik Prince's Mom, David Bossie (Citizens United) etc etc.
They. Are. Dominionists.
Leonard Leo. CNP. Federalist Society. Theocracy.
Fuck off, Dominionists.
SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE-THAT'S WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT!
Y'all knew the culture and electoral system wouldn't get you there.
So you bought a whole buncha judgeships.
Well, #FAIL.
Boop.
We see you trying to subvert democratic norms, you idiots.

We were shocked, and it often shocks others, that Amnesty International is in favour of female sexual slavery and sexual exploitation - here is their prostitution policy: scribd.com/doc/202126121/…
'Amnesty International believes that seeking, buying, selling and soliciting paid sex are acts protected from state interference as long as there is no coercion, threats or violence associated with those acts'.
What about financial coercion?
Do Amnesty think the power balance is one of equality? From Dt. Superintendent Sporer 'Several women finally stated that these men had exploited them and had put pressure on them. ..

The murders of #ShannanWatts, Bella,4, Celeste ,3 and the unborn baby boy, Nico, are a devastating reminder that several thousand women are killed each year by #domesticviolence in America and the @WhiteHouse has never once tweeted about it.
According to the CDC and FBI, more than 2k women are killed each year in the U.S. by men. The majority of these killings are #domesticviolence, but there are also murders like that of #MollieTibbetts--women who are murdered by strangers.
Each year the number of women murdered in the US is higher.
#DomesticViolence remains largely unaddressed, under-reported and under-prosecuted, as the current suspension of #UrbanMeyer indicates.

Brave, powerful, painful piece by #KellyMarieTran on online harassment of women and POC that is a must-read.
We can't say it enough: #RepresentationMatters.
Our kids are growing up on social media seeing this kind of harassment of people like them.
It must stop.
I stupidly read the thread below @nytimesarts tweet and it was just horrible. I saw ONE supportive tweet. The rest were vicious, calling #KellyMarieTran leaving sm a PR stunt, calling her a terrible actress, etc.

This seems pretty poignant to me, though.
I wonder some days how it is possible for white people (yes, I know I'm white, don't @ me) to go through so much of our American life not seeing the sheer breadth of #racism in this country and how interconnected it is with #misogyny for WOC.

We really must do better.

I lost over 100 followers this week standing up for WOC being attacked by white women.
I'm sorry to have lost them because it means those folks missed the point.
White people have an obligation to POC in America because of the damage #racism inflicts even if we aren't #racist.
1/
The hardest words in any language are "I'm sorry."
Acknowledging our flaws goes against ego.
But it's essential.
I know I am a strong person with strong Socialist politics.
I know I can be intense.
But I am a fiundamentally kind person who doesn't want to hurt people.
2/
At times I know I <have> hurt people--we all have.
And that is my point: If people tell you you have hurt them, listen.
I don't mean casual snark, but hurt.
Listen.
Say you are sorry.
Repentance is under-utilized and under-valued, and that's not just my Catholicism talking.

#AndrewSullivan has been a contrarian conservative transplant for decades now.
Pro-Bush, pro-Bell Curve, #misogynist to the core.
His latest screed is an embarrassment to @NYMag, which reps some stellar writers. There's so much awful to excerpt here.
1/
nymag.com/daily/intellig…
We're at a racial crossroads in America right now. Some of us white people have tried to write about it with passion and humility. Not #AndrewSullivan, who refers back to the atavism of 1920s xenophobia and racism with an appallingly anti-intellectual lack of self-awareness.
2/
This latest screed is a paean to white male fragility. The bluster and outrage #AndrewSullivan reserves for #SarahJeong is typical of his sneering, superior form of racist baiting with a hefty dollop of misogyny folded in.

It's essential to decry such writing when we see it.

Will no one save me from Franken truthers?

Do any of you think about how it feels to victims of sexual assault to have you running around slandering the woman with the most progressive voting record in the Senate in defense of a man accused by nine women of sexual misonduct?
1/
I don't know what is in the water tonight that put this back on Twitter again. Maybe @SenGillibrand leading a protest against #BrettKavanaugh. Maybe @TinaSmithMN being so obviously more engaged in that MN Senate seat than her predecessor.

But why not just stop it?

2/
I liked Al Franken's books. I never was a fan of his jocular sexism. But he didn't bother me in the Senate because he was a back bencher.

Unlike Kirsten Gillibrand, who spent the last decade being the loudest voice for sexual assault victims in Congress. She made it her focus.

Two hours of watching #AudreyHepburn playing a blind woman terrorized by abusive men followed by two hours of watching @MiaFarrow playing a blind woman terrorized by abusive men.

Apparently this was a trope in the late 60s.
Peak ableism meets peak #misogyny.
After she was flailing around in mud for a half hour, barefoot, @MiaFarrow's boyfriend doesn't even bathe her. Just another layer of abuse, imo.
She's lying in her bed with mud on her face and in her hair.
So she has to get up and bathe herself, even though she's injured.
So of course it's Chekov's bath.

Another "terrorize the blind girl" film ffrom that period was A Patch of Blue with Elizabeth Hartman and Sidney Poitier.

I have been totally transparent that I support women candidates.

I created #FlipItFemale (I think--parallel generation happens on here a lot).

Women are 52% of the US population and 15% representation.

If there are 2 progressive candidates and one is female, #vote her.

1/
Representation matters.
Right now women are in a literal fight for our lives against the Trump-led #GOP juggernaut that wants to eviscerate every protection based on sex that women have fought for for decades like #EqualPay #ReproRights & #TitleIX.

We need women in Congress.
2/
We've been told #FlipItFemale is "identity politics" when it's actually majority politics. White men are the minority--why do they wield all the power?

Men with lesser resumes and experience than women rise because of structural #misogyny.

Change that by voting for women.

My mentions are full of angry people tonight.
White women who still can't accept that the majority (52%) of white women-- including Democrats and Sanders supporters--voted for Trump.

I agree it's ugly.
And fundamentally about #racism and internalized #misogyny.
Fix it for 2020.
Many of us in the #Resistance, as activists, as journalists, are here of necessity--we are trying to save our families, our friends, our communities, our country.

Part of that fight has to be acknowledging and refuting the structural #racism and #misogyny that elected Trump.
Only 31% of white men voted for Hillary.
Disgraceful--yet expected.
White men haven't voted Dem since 1968 (except 1992).
But white women?
Voting AGAINST their own interests & those of every other woman in America when WOC voted 94% Hillary?

We cannot let that happen again.

Structural #misogyny is as deeply entrenched as #racism. Women are paid less: only 5% of highest wage earners & 80% of lowest. 1 in 5 is raped, 1 in 4 a victim of DV. Hillary addressed BOTH racism & misogyny AND pledged to create a gender & race parous admin, upending status quo.
No other woman in US history got within reach of political power that #HillaryClinton did.

It took 242yrs.

Somehow that doesn't register with folks as a huge issue: that folks STILL want to invalidate HRC's accomplishments to refute what was done to her: A stolen presidency.
For weeks the nation stopped to fight for Al Gore in 2000. There wasn't a moment or a single recount for #HillaryClinton.

Why not?

Why did we just accept that states that hadn't voted #GOP in decades had narrowly--mere thousands, less than a half percent of votes--gone red?

I stand with @JoyAnnReid
I stand with black women.
I stood with black women in 2005.
I've stood with black women since I was a child & my parents were Civil Rights workers.
I will stand with black women till my last breath.
If you do NOT stand with black women, ask yourself why.
As a #lesbian, I hope people will stand with/for me.
They don't always, because being an ally takes work.
But I welcome allies, no matter how long it takes folks to get there.
We must believe in people being able to #change.
None of us has perfect politics nor personal lives.
Every day people change.
People who were racists realize they were wrong.
Men who were misogynists realize women are people.
Homophobes realize they were wrong.

We all have the power to realize we have been wrong and to change.
Embrace change.
It's how we heal the world.

I have some #NewYearsResolutions to share.

You all know I don't use foul language on here, but this iconic warrior trope seems a good place to start 2018.
1/
I've spent 3yrs reporting on Trump's every egregious move. I'll still be doing that in 2018, but I'll also be focusing on women running for office.

Traditionally women have received less/worse coverage than men. That must change. Only news orgs/reporters can change this.
2/

/
One of my #NewYearsResolutions
is to beat back #cancer.

In 2017 I didn't prioritize my time within the possibility of my death hovering. I must do that in 2018 and I would urge EVERYONE to live more like you have limited time rather than limitless time.

Focus, act, #resist.

I stayed off Twitter for 24hrs to try &reclaim my personal time &prioritize writing, finishing this next book, since my health is so dire.
1/
But also,Saturday I was utterly disgusted by the overt racism of white women claiming to be Dems/progs/left in my mentions. It was awful.
2/
#Cancer makes you both more patient & less so. I never curse or name-call on here, but I don't sit back & watch WOC being shafted by WW.
