1.) Prof. Barbara Oakley of Oakland University and the author of a book on learning writes that contrary to the new movement to make #STEM subjects of which #maths is the sine qua non a fun to learn.

All learning isn't-and shouldn't be "fun".

Part of my role is early engagement, giving children and teachers insight into engineering and rail jobs. My team is working hard to deliver a series of events for the Year of Engineering campaign.

The campaign is important to people in different ways, for different reasons.
We face a skills shortage. We have forecast skills gaps in the future. Too few children are making choices at school that will allow them to have enough choices at university or when entering the workplace, particularly in science, technology, engineering and maths.
If we don't see an increase in interest and uptake in #stem subjects, the gap will only worsen and the country, and people, won't have the skills needed for vital roles.

Children need guidance to make these important decisions. So the people who influence them, are key.

The purpose of the Canada Summer Jobs Program is to help youth gain job experience to help them (and ultimately the country) with their futures. 1/8 #cdnpoli
Did you catch that? It's for youth, not employers. Yes, it rewards the employer for helping the youth, but its purpose is not for the employer. 2/8
If the gov't looks ahead to what our country is going to need & they see we will need more people working in a particular field then they should encourage employers in that field to give youth opportunity for that experience. Right now that happens to be #STEM 3/8

I know this tweet is months old, but the baby rudefem in me can’t #resist! 🤪

1) we don’t owe men silence about the abuse they subject us to
2) WiFi, which you and all these other pathetic handmaidens use to tweet this fuckshit, was invented by a WOMAN! #HedyLamarr
3) If women could reproduce asexually, males would be obsolete. I guarantee you fam, a woman would’ve invented the phone eons before if girls weren’t barred from (and still discriminated against to this day in) #STEM. Males aren’t special.
I’d kindly suggest you probably shut the fuck up. 💁🏾‍♀️

Monday, first topic: the journey to #scicomm.
There are plenty of ways to be involved in scicomm, as shown by the variety of hosts for this account.
I’ll discuss how I went from research to #scicomm, but I am curious about you.
What is your primary occupation?
If #scicomm is your primary occupation, which background do you have ?
If research is your primary occupation, what kind of #scicomm/outreach are you mostly involved in?

#Fact 1 - The Wage Gap is real. People who says it's not haven't read the data.

However, in places like the USA, the wage gap is *not* mostly due to sexism like many #femnist #WomenInScience are claiming it is today. Disparate outcomes doesn't imply disparate treatment.
Women typically choose fields that are lower paying; even in the #STEM fields. To attribute that to sexism only or even mostly is a very dishonest way of deriving an answer for this complex disparity.

When the US Department of Labor Statistics took into consideration personal choices, non-wage benefits, hours worked, experience, education, and other variables that contributes to the wage gap the percentage of earnings decreases to approximately 3%.

In 1986, the largest group of workers was in occupations classified as skill lvl 4 (roughly equivalent to a certificate II or III). Nowadays, the largest group of workers is in the highest (skill level 1) category - occupations requiring a bachelor degree/higher qualification.
Despite all the hype about #STEM skills, occupations requiring communication skills are actually growing fastest.

Apparently, I’m about to weed a lot of new followers out on day 1, so let’s just get this out of the way right now.
1) You are following my personal account. I talk about what I want here. You do not get to dictate or police that.
I tweet about politics, cocktails, terrible jokes, feminism, inclusion, puppies, and yes, STEM.

So I left #postdoc, and I left #adjunct and went into #industry. There are two things I wish I knew when making this transition, and I hope it may help you...
...I didn’t know what buzzwords to put on my resume to make it reflect, in #industry terms, my skills. For #STEM academics, I’ve learned that a lot of what we do includes systems engineering, and project management...
...now this may be obvious to some of you, esp the E part of #stem, but I didn’t know this. I recommend looking up buzzwords for sys eng and project management...
