I am SICK to my stomach. This is white supremacy. This is fascism on the rise globally. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
And for those who do not know about the #WindrushGeneration - these were Black people from Caribbean nations (mostly from JA) who were INVITED by the British Gov't from 1948 - 1971 to help meet a labor shortage GB was having at the time.
GB 1971 Immigration Act gave all Commonwealth citizens who were already living in the UK the right to stay permanently. So what's going on now?? Well -as fascism is rising in the UK & "cracking down on immigrants" is not the order of the day...

3.7M Europeans in #BrexitBritain have intentionally been kept #inlimbo about their future lives here for 2 years
The state of #HumanRights as set by @ukhomeoffice for #Immigrants should send shivers down our spines

"Repeated warnings about the developing Windrush scandal were made over the course of several years to both the Foreign Office and the Home Office but no action was taken" by @ameliagentleman
amp.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/j…
As #OneOfThe3Million I have become aware how some people in our society are subject to a catalogue of horrendous fees as well as harsh, illogical & often frankly inhumane rules @ukhomeoffice applies without any consideration of their circumstances & their established lives here

1/ After the #WindrushScandal media, politicians & organisations are worried that the 3.6m EU citizens in the UK might fall into the #HostileEnvironment after Brexit. The truth is that we are already deep in it.
2/ part of the #HostileEnvironment is the right-to-rent scheme. Threatening Landlords with £3k fine should they rent to someone undocumented. @RLA_PEARL research shows that as a result 1 in 6 landlords already reluctant to let to EU citizens.
3/ Employers are also already discriminating against EU citizens in fear of the £20k fine they face as part of #HostileEnvironment. Triggering @PaulBlomfieldMP to write to @DavidDavisMP last August

Short Thread about the @AmberRuddHR memo. #Windrush
This is a quote from the memo, "This will move us along the path towards the 10% increased performance on enforced returns, which we promised the home secretary earlier this year."

So regardless of whether she... 1/x
...actually read the memo, she was aware the Immigration Enforcement Agency was attempting to increase enforced returns by 10%. How did she think that was going to happen? Put in some policies & hope for the best? Anyone who has worked in any sort of modern large... 2/x
...organisation would know that that would be broken down into regional targets, team targets, all the way down to individual officials' KPIs, which was, of course, the evidence given to the Select Committee this week.

So, giving #AmberRudd the benefit of the doubt... 3/x

1/ There seems to be a coordinated attack by @LBC on the more understanding press coverage EU citizens have received after the Home Office shambles regarding the plight of the #WindrushGeneration. Using targeted xenophobic harassment directed at Romanians & Bulgarians
2/ @NickFerrariLBC directly on @LBC and @toryboypierce who is also a presenter at that station.
3/ pitching the plight of the #WindrushGeneration directly against EU citizens and especially against Romanians & Bulgarians who they class as rapists, paedophiles & criminals

1/ Yesterday, we met @carolinenokes the immigration minister, and senior civil servants of the Home Office in the House of Commons.
2/ During a frank exchange, the minister confirmed that the Home Office would not test EU citizens retrospectively for having exercised treaty rights when they apply for settled status.
3/ She committed to making details available about the scheme by replying in writing to all 128 questions the3million published by us last week the3million.org.uk/128questions

A #Windrush thread

Theresa May has met Caribbean leaders to talk about the treatment of the #windrushgeneration. Yesterday Downing Street refused such a meeting. But she’s changed her mind.
The Daily Mail thinks that was because it told her to. It may well be right.
The Mail has clout. It can change things for the better when it puts its mind to it. This could be described as good #journalism.
But good journalism (imho) also requires giving the reader the full story, not just the convenient bits.
Today’s paper includes a ragout from its Saturday essay, headlined “What an outrage!” (You may have missed it or not realised what it was about – that could be the heading on almost any Saturday essay).

1/ #Windrush scandal shows that #citizensrights granted 47 years ago to thousands of immigrants can't be taken for granted. The main victims are those who came here as children before 1971 & who've lived here undisturbed until the introduction of the hostile environment in 2012
2/ there are strong parallels here with ca 727k EU children living in the UK. In a recent report @MigObs has identified children as one of the groups most likely to fall through the net when it comes to applying for and securing Settled Status
migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/repo…
3/ We might not have to wait 47 years to see the effect of the hostile environment coming to bite those young EU citizens. What will happen to a 2 year old missed by the Settled Status system now when they want to enter the job market in 16 years when they turn 18?
