But now, onto my own personal summation of this all. The @Guardian, it is THE paper and site that gives most national (UK) and international (USA, Australia, the damned world) to coverage of issues like poverty, class. It has worldclass investigative #journalism. But.....
... but I admit to being more than fully cheesed off with the Guardian myself. I was a loyal funder, around 60 quid a month, I stopped completely, because the Guardian's new policies were so idiotic and off-putting, not to mention counter-productive.
But! ....
But, bluntly, the @Guardian still is THE major newspaper in the UK, the USA or Australia, to give a very wide range of opinion from the public, & to also give reasonably trustworthy investigative #journalism.
I refuse to contribute money, but it's still very much my first go-to.

Oh, and let's discuss that bit of trivia, that went trending on Twitter for a short while, only in the UK, naturally. The #BoycottTheGuardian garbage. Because maybe the UK could benefit from dosing up the tapwater with lithium and haloperidol too.
For those who don't know it: the @guardian is a broadsheet, i.e. a respectable newspaper, not a scandal-mongering tabloid, based in the UK, though its web-presence is heavy in the USA and Australia. It is the smallest of national broadsheets in the UK, and the best one.
The @Guardian, national broadsheet w/ the smallest subscription in the UK, is also the most "left"-wing & liberal of the UK national broadsheets. Known 1821 till 1959 as the Manchester Guardian, it has done a huge deal of v important investigative #journalism over the centuries.

Short lap. Check out the horn on that caterpillar, though!
I was gonna start a šŸ¦† party hashtag, but there was some weird stuff associated with that. Seriously, always check before you start a hashtag.
There was some serious jostling and splashing going on. My guess is itā€™s the feisty young adults, testing their feathers.

I don't have a course to give a pep talk to any more, so if you're starting any #Journalism undergrad course in the morning, here are my top tips.
1) Today is the first day of your professional life as a journalist. Keep your eye on the exit. Three years will pass very quickly, if you wait until finals to think about your first job you've missed the opportunity.
2) Noone in the real world cares about your marks, so long as you pass everything. It's nice to get a First, and with the right attitude it's more than possible, but given the choice between brilliant grades and work experience, take the placement. Every. Time.

A friend asked me how I knew this in 2016, during the campaign, before the election, how did I know to raise red flags about #TrumpRussia #TrumpLies #TrumpCrimeSyndicate #PenceKnew #Manafort 1/
She went on: youā€™re busy, youā€™re just a normal civilian person, you run a small business, youā€™re focused on working, your family, how did you figure out and know what was wrong with Trump, Russia, the GOP, why the election was different? 2/
First, letā€™s acknowledge lots of people knew, too. I donā€™t just mean the intelligence community, or the co-conspirators and accomplices to treason and illegal activities, I mean lots of other regular people like me. There are some common qualities and habits we share 3/

I know it's late, and there are immediate needs families are dealing with, but coverage of the #AndoverMAFires #LawrenceFires is already atrocious, so I wanted to share a few general thoughts and observations, some of which may explain what you're about to see unfold. #mapoli

šŸ˜‚ oh I can't wait for this relaunch. Gawker is the worst of the worst, dumpster trash internet journalism, and they already still exist with all their writers and bloggers under other websites. Get them all back in one place again so it's easier to laugh at please. Thanks

Now itā€™s time for the @BadPressAwards at @BylineFest hosted by @johnmitchinson

He says thereā€™s a Chinese proverb - lies in a newspaper are like rat droppings in a soup. They are both disgusting and obvious.

He says today the awards are a cornucopia of shit soupā€¦

@BadPressAwards @BylineFest @johnmitchinson ā€¦ John says that standards are lower than ever before, and this year international bodies have cited the UKs news industry as an outlier in terms of how little the public trust it.
The first award: most obvious sponsored content. News that is really advertising, but is disguised as a news story...

There's all kinds of regulation over commerce, and most of us conservatives are familiar with and can readily cite examples of where it has failed or even produced exactly the opposite result of what was purported to be intended, or worse. >
> OTOH we take a lot of regulation that almost certainly does increase welfare, arguably at a trivial cost in terms of economic liberty, for granted. You don't want to think of what you'd be eating every day if not for the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, for example. >
> I'm sure there are papers that negate that assertion but go with me on this for purposes of this thread.

One area in which our government has treaded relatively lightly in regulation might seem to be expression and communication, because of the First Amendment.

Wrong! >

Has there been any explanation put forward yet for the stunning, massive destruction of crime scene evidence at the #TaosCompound by local authorities?

I assume #journalism is all over this
Seriously @NewMexicoOAG - what's the story here? How did you permit the wholesale destruction of not just crime scene evidence but *the crime scene* itself? What oversight was involved in this process?
How did the destruction of the #TaosCompound protect the citizens of New Mexico, much less victims who had no choice about being there? How about the rights of those charged with unlawful conduct there - shouldn't possibly exculpatory evidence have been preserved?

Mini #journalism thread:

Some debate as to whether this story by @l_stone is a giant ā€œnothingburgerā€, as per @garry_keller, a former chief of staff to former Foreign Minister @baird
I think itā€™s a story, but not the story thatā€™s reported. The Liberals got lucky. Pitching this attack could have easily resulted in a story that read: ā€œGarneau launches errant attack over thing thatā€™s done all of the time and isnā€™t even NAFTA-relatedā€.
The partisan in me wants to think thatā€™s how this fact-free attack would have been reported had the Tories pitched it (especially with facts now supposedly at a premium). Lord knows I pitched enough attacks that werenā€™t picked up because the, um, facts didnā€™t support them.

Please indulge me for a rare (but brief) thread of personal comments.
I was on a city bus in Copenhagen early this morning. A young man clearly suffering from mental illness was screaming angrily. Not an unusual occurrence on urban transport. Passengers ignored him. 1/
Suddenly the man rushed to the front of the bus and began viciously punching and stabbing the driver. A passenger intervened - he disarmed and subdued the man. (Turns out he used to be a police officer in Syria.) Two women in hijabs came to the bus driver's aid. /2
One was a nurse from Somalia. The other was a nurse from Iraq. (The bus route services a major hospital.) Police arrested the man. The bus driver, despite his injuries, asked police if they could ensure the man got help for his "mental sickness." 3/

News was a historical cultural invention within certain conditions and with specific functions. Those conditions have now changed, I argued, leading to the demise of news. medium.com/s/story/face-iā€¦

Day 3 of our #WorldPressFreedomDay series on the working lives of #freelancers worldwide - today we're sharing insights from freelance investigative journalist Mabvuto Banda, who lives and works in Malawi. Follow this thread across the day to hear about his experiences
The climate for journalists in #Malawi has improved over the last 15 years. Nonetheless Mabvuto has been arrested on numerous occasions during his twenty-year career in #journalism. In Malawi, a law still provides for the imprisonment of anyone who 'insults' the head of state.
Mabvuto said of the photo above: ā€œThis is me with reporters in the #newsroom. We were working on a story about the growing calls within the ruling party to push the current President to stand down." [1/2]

A #Windrush thread

Theresa May has met Caribbean leaders to talk about the treatment of the #windrushgeneration. Yesterday Downing Street refused such a meeting. But sheā€™s changed her mind.
The Daily Mail thinks that was because it told her to. It may well be right.
The Mail has clout. It can change things for the better when it puts its mind to it. This could be described as good #journalism.
But good journalism (imho) also requires giving the reader the full story, not just the convenient bits.
Todayā€™s paper includes a ragout from its Saturday essay, headlined ā€œWhat an outrage!ā€ (You may have missed it or not realised what it was about ā€“ that could be the heading on almost any Saturday essay).

Hard-left 'journalists' doing their bit to sweep #LabourAntisemitism under the carpet [thread]. Anyone who's studied history & political language will recognise the sinister echoes; I wonder how history will treat these attempts to rewrite the present #journalism #media
Skwawkbox:
"The Establishment and its media have continued to attempt to push as fact the idea that Labour has an ā€˜antisemitism problemā€™ ā€“ which says far more about the Establishment and its media than about Labour and its leader."
Also Skwawkbox:
"Theresa May just labelled every Labour member as someone who does not oppose antisemitism."
"Worst of all, she labelled every Jewish member."
"The media ignored it".
