This is a terrifying assault on people with disabilities, especially disabled people of color. It makes use of legal tools born of xenophobia and eugenic fear-mongering. #CripTheVote
The "public charge" statute was put into US immigration law by the Immigration Act of 1882, passed in response to a growing wave of anti-immigrant sentiment against the Irish, Chinese and other relatively new immigrant groups.
It specifically targeted “any convict, lunatic, idiot, or any person unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge" - from the very beginning, the law sought to exclude disabled people from the country. #DisHist

🛎RED ALERT🛎Trump just unilaterally expanded his powers to attack immigrants & working families w/new #publiccharge rule

This is Trump at his worst:
❌ Rigging system for the rich
❌Emboldening white supremacists
❌Separating families
❌Cutting kids healthcare

Thread ⬇️
What is public charge? For a summary, read this thread: ), but basically, it's an arcane policy from 1892 (originally designed to keep out Irish Catholics), Today, the rule excludes immigrants likely to rely on govt for subsistence. 2/
What does Trump’s rule do?

It RADICALLY expands the existing rule to essentially make being (or being related to) a working-class immigrant a reason to fear for yourself and your family.

So since I was paralyzed I do my (limited) shopping online like many #disabled folks.

@OldNavy told me they'd send me an item that never made it into my order.

I said, "Please be sure you don't charge me a 2nd time."

Item just arrived.
Wrong size AND they charged me again.🤐
This may sound like first world problems, but for #disabled and/or chronically ill people who are unable to shop in brick and mortar stores--which I happen to LOVE--having online retailers like @OldNavy follow through for #disabled customers matters.
#CripTheVote
.@OldNavy I love your clothes and your sales and affordable prices, but this is a two-time error and will make it very difficult to return. Plus you charged me twice.

Please be more aware of #disabled customers who can't just walk into a store with a return.

Thanks.

A10. I never know what to share here. Always forget the question is coming. 🤣

Only news right now is that I'll be starting my Early Voting resource soon. It's harder to be disenfranchised if you vote early or by absentee/mail-inz. #spooniechat
It's most helpful in states where they tell you when your vote has been counting. Also try @resistbot @make5calls @hellovote & #PostcardstoVoters

THREAD: Tonight was the first night that I saw @RepKevinBrady answer questions without pre-selecting the questions. Here is the breakdown.
1/ Typically @bradyfortexas doesn’t host public town halls. He will pick his audience (think oil and gas employees, conservative groups, etc) and go speak to them, in which there is either a fee to get in or you have to be an employee of the company.
2/ Tonight was different for two reasons: 1) he spoke to a Woodlands village association (open to the public), and 2) it was announced about 2 weeks ago. Typically he will only give a 2-3 day heads up for a public event if he holds one.

Hi friends!

Today, as we mark the 28th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA28), let’s do one better.

Let’s stop relegating people with disabilities to a single day in the calendar.

(THREAD)
1. One in five Americans are people with disabilities. NEWSFLASH: This makes pretty much every issue a disability issue—from health care to the economy to the environment, to criminal justice, and more.
2. But for too long the notion of “disability policy” has lived in a silo—artificially & counterproductively separate from the fight to end poverty & tackle inequality, to curb climate change, to achieve criminal justice reform, and even the fight for universal health care.

It's the incomparable @CJ_the_Actor!! 🙌 #UnitedShades #DeafTalent
My mom is scrambling to find her glasses right now so she can watch #UnitedShades...HILARIOUS
The disability community is not a monolith. There are worlds within worlds each w/ unique identities, languages, practices, and cultures.

We are part of every community.

There's no way to cover everything in a single episode of tv but it’s a start. #UnitedShades

People who can’t caucus:
Hourly workers
Introvert
Autistic
Elderly
Chronic pain
Pregnant
Parents of young children
Unreliable transportation
Can’t stand or sit for long periods
Boss at caucus
Abusive Husband at caucus
Caucuses favor able bodied extroverts with money and time
Unity commission members pushed caucus expansion to disenfranchise certain demographics.
Caucuses should end not expand.
I can’t count the number of woman on NH phones and doors who made it very clear they could not discuss their preference for Hillary in front of the husband. So routine the occurrence.

Here's how #HR620 will begin dismantling the #ADA, excluding us from public life, and why it's imperative we get all the attention we can over the next few days. #CripTheVote #HandsOffMyADA
#HR620 is a short bill, its about four pages long. It was introduced by @HouseGOP Rep. @JudgeTedPoe of Texas. Ted Poe is an asshole. Unfortunately, there are over 100 cosponsors of this piece of trash, including 11 @HouseDemocrats.
jonathanturley.org/2009/11/17/sha…
§1 of the bill is simply provides that the title for the bill is the "ADA Education and Reform Act of 2017." And who doesn't love education, right? Section 1 of the text which can be found at https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/620/text

A thing I found out last year while bombing off of medication I didn’t want that didn’t work is that if I find a doctor willing to do the job my insurance will still never cover pain relief lasting over three hours or so.

I’m still wondering whose idea of harm reduction that is.
And on that note #cripthevote
I keep finding a chilling effect on talking explicitly about how fucked up my insurance is, like by calling out WA Medicaid being horrible I’m letting down the side.

But I’m 22, I’m supposed to be being done with lying to preserve the reputations of people who hurt me. Right?

I had another life-threatening heart/lung episode today.
I'm not sure how much of it had to do with my cutting my heart meds back to once a day while appealing the increased price by my health insurance from $120 for 60 pills to $1k for 60 pills.
We had to call 9/11.
Scary.
1/
I couldn't afford to go to the hospital--when you call 9/11 the city charges you $1,200 for the trip to nearest hospital.
They only accept cash.
The EMTs checked me out, told me to take the heart meds the way they were prescribed, established I wasn't in VFib, just SVT AFib.
2/
So all day, instead of doing work that needs to be done, I have been trying to get my heart rate under 140, which given my lung meds increase my heart rate, has been more work: breathing exercises my PT taught me, single nostril breathing @HillaryClinton taught me (try it).

Yesterday, I linked to @CharlesPPierce's piece arguing that @realDonaldTrump is exhibiting serious cognitive decline. I said he has dementia. I invited you to share your stories of loved ones with similar problems, & hundreds of you did, movingly.
But some of you also pushed back, arguing that it was irresponsible of me to make that armchair diagnosis, because it stigmatizes people with mental illness. It's an important critique, on a crucial question in American politics, so let's talk about it now. #CripTheVote
Last year, disability rights organizers @SFdirewolf @AndrewPulrang & @GreggBeratan created the hashtag #CripTheVote to mobilize disabled voters and talk about disability issues. So we should that hashtag here.

If you want to play along, here is the actual Full Text of Tax Plan aka #GOPTaxScam I am going to start reading and commenting follow if you want thread 1/? docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/…
If you acquire a new home, you can only deduct $750,000 in interest, compared to $1,000,000.00 before. This could impact many homes in California, NY, and in a lot of urban areas that vote Democrat. #TrumpTax Plan 2/?
The #StudentLoan interest deduction will remain. Because they did not repeal all of the #EstateTax they just raised the exemption from 5 million to 10 million. #GOPTaxPlan 3/?

my dominant hand is completely numb from an injection, but i just called my representative to oppose HR 620 - the ADA reform act of 2017
.@JudgeTedPoe introduced the bill, which aims to place to burden of accessibility on disabled humans instead of businesses
this disgusting bill posits that even though the ADA has existed for nearly THREE DECADES, businesses have it too tough to comply
