As we close in on the start of a new #highered academic year, here’s a short thread on some easy things faculty can do to be good company for #trans students. #academictwitter
1. Don’t call roll. Instead, invite students to share their name. If there are discrepancies between your official roster and what they share, defer to the student without fanfare or hesitation.
2. Demand to teach your course in a building with all gender restrooms. If there aren’t any, ask why, and remind folks in your department you’ll ask the same thing be done next term, which gives them a few months to put pressure on administrators in your college/unit.

I get why "God made Adam & Eve, not Adam & Steve"-type conservatives want to dwell on "biological sex," as it seems consistent with their highly essentialist ideology. But I cannot fathom why any self-described #feminist would resort to this line of reasoning...
If we reduce people to their supposed "biological sex" & start regulating what they can (& cannot) do based on it, it basically opens the doors to discriminating against people for their sexual orientation & gender non-conformity...

A major difference bt conservatives & the rest of us is that conservatives, for some reason, prioritize hypothetical violence above actual violence.

What is unfathomable is the hypocrisy. This soldier clearly passed the Army’s standards & requirements- around training, health, behavior/comportment- kept her nose clean, did her job for 4 yrs. All just for this soldier to be kicked out w no real cause & risk #deportation.
You know how isn’t always kicked out of our #military with this kind of vigor?

...I mean, this entire screed is a farce, but perhaps the most ridiculous part is the bit at the end about having to "mention evolution" in the first paragraph. I've read plenty of *actual scientific articles* on human sex & sexuality that don't mention evolution at all!

1/thread: Had a brain-shattering convo with a teen about #pronouns. I think many adults poo-poo 💩 the topic, but I [an adult by any measure] have some alternative thoughts🙋.
2/thread: Alot of what the teen said was hard for me to understand. Ie, sometimes the teen prefers she/her; other times they/them. I was like, "How do we know which? How do YOU know which?" 🤔I could understand why older, set-in-their-ways folks wouldn't at ALL get it👀.
3/thread: But THAT thought--how older generations were raised with pretty linear🙈, narrow🙉, "accepted roles" 🙊(for men & women; for Americans & "foreigners," etc) made a💡turn on for me.
