A few thoughts on today's #nodeal notices - as others have said, these are some of the really juicy ones...

gov.uk/government/col…

(1/8)
This is the first time, AFAIK, that the Government has accepted in such stark terms that no deal will mean:

- disruption to supply chains
- potential for no flights or bus services between UK and EU, and between UK and other countries (including flights to US)

(2/8)
- extra red tape, as businesses have to re-register their products/services in an EU country
- real problems at the border, particularly around Dover/Calais
- hassle for individuals (pet passports, motor insurance)

Thread: "#Brexit & #Chequers, the sellout. Dump it, let's move on".
...
I keep hearing "Where is the plan?" and a load of misinformation on #Brexit, pushed on UK media by irrelevant & biased commentators, elevated simply because they are avid Remoaners.
They aim to distract.
1/19
We already knew from those tasked with the negotiations, there had been a definite direction of travel & #Brexit plans were well advanced, prior to #Chequers.

2/19
David Davis & his team had been constantly rebuffed by Number 10, as they tried to pursue a proper #Brexit plan, but they HAD been making progress.

So, as you may have seen, the @UKandEU report on a #NoDeal Brexit is out today. ukandeu.ac.uk/wp-content/upl… And whilst, obvs, most of you are already immersed in it, thought I'd attempt q quick summary for the lazy people (1)
We try to explain what No Deal means. There is a tendency to elide it with 'trading on WTO terms'. Which, of course, would be possible with a withdrawal agreement. We also make clear the crucial point that, unlike with most 'deals.' default outcome is not the status quo. (2)
We deliberately pick the worst case. Where we leave with no deal at all. Which, as we point out, we do not think is by any manner of means the most likely outcome. That being said, however, we argue that, in the event of a no deal, mitigations will be hard (3)

"#OrganDonation is an altruistic act that should be celebrated..." (p6)

So why not do that, and devote more resources to making donation easier - an approach that has delivered measurable results - instead of a regressive move to #OrganHarvesting?
gov.uk/government/con…
Describing a *significantly narrowing* shortfall (cf. graph, also p6) in available organs is not a justification for a change to #OrganHarvesting; nor are emotive appeals. This reads like #PolicyBasedEvidenceMaking.
"We want... to change the culture around organ donation in this country in the longer term." (p7)

Stopping it being a gift, freely given, and instead the State 'deeming' you to have given permission will certainly change that! Presumption ain't 'donation' and will erode trust.

@joelymack Here’s some data if it helps. U.K., that was at the top of the G7 prior to Brexit is now an outlier.
@joelymack 2/. ONS. Household expenditure now exceeds income. First time since 1988 Average £900 shortfall.

Not all households face the same budget pressures – the poorest 10% of households are most likely to spend more than they receive in income

@joelymack 3/. Q2 2018. Red Flag Research that monitors the financial health of UK companies, 472,183 businesses were experiencing ‘Significant’ financial distress at the end of June 2018, up 9% compared to the same stage last year (Q2 2017:).

Dear @MattHancock.

I’ve been trying to understand the WTO/No Deal scenario. For the NHS, there is no contingency plan for “No Deal” that won’t stop people dying.

/thread
Firstly, here is my attempt to understand WTO rules and what happens to us if we leave on no deal:

I’ll wait.
2/ The NHS, long before Brexit, from your govt & your mate Jeremy, is in poor shape.
- We don’t have enough staff (100,000 short total, 40,000 nurses, 10,000 doctors)
- we don’t have enough funding (~£26b)
- Demand continues to rise by 4% every year

1) Following the failure of any Kent MPs to support business friendly amendments for the Taxation (Cross Border Bill) over the past 2 days we feel the need to explain why VAT is such an important issue for small business.
2) To begin, you have to understand that the #SingleMarket is only a Single Market for countries who are members of it. Businesses from 3rd countries not only have to deal with the taxman in each country they do business with, but also in each country their goods flow through.
3) At present, a UK company selling goods to Germany or providing parts in a supply chain will usually truck these goods via the @Port_of_Dover and land them in Calais. Within the #SingleMarket this is easy as they just pass through France without involvement of the French taxman

1. Once again, despite a better first year than Reagan, all kinds of Trump supporters are getting bent out of shape over things they hear are being "put on the table" in the immigration negotiations with the Democrats.

Let's talk about why you should Stay Calm.
@realDonaldTrump
2. Everyone who has no experience negotiating deals summed up by 100+ pages of legalese should pay attention. You can learn the most important rule of negotiating next:

"If you aren't willing to walk away with NO DEAL, you've already lost."

Where've you heard that before? 😀
3. Negotiating an immigration deal falls under that rule

One side has multiple choices they can offer (Trump) & the other side (Dems) already have deal breaker "minimums" their radical base is demanding.
(From outside of Schumer's house @ 3 AM)

Only Trump can walk away
