Given that the UK will be days away from leaving the @DSMeu when I deliver one of the lectures... on the #digital #singlemarket it's going to call for some agile teaching because I have no doubt the UK government will still be making it up as they go along as they have thus far.
However, whatever the stress caused by this, my thoughts will be with fellow British lecturers, academics & researchers in the EU27 and EU27 lecturers, academics & researchers in the UK who do not know their future.
1) Following the failure of any Kent MPs to support business friendly amendments for the Taxation (Cross Border Bill) over the past 2 days we feel the need to explain why VAT is such an important issue for small business.
2) To begin, you have to understand that the #SingleMarket is only a Single Market for countries who are members of it. Businesses from 3rd countries not only have to deal with the taxman in each country they do business with, but also in each country their goods flow through.
3) At present, a UK company selling goods to Germany or providing parts in a supply chain will usually truck these goods via the @Port_of_Dover and land them in Calais. Within the #SingleMarket this is easy as they just pass through France without involvement of the French taxman

Here’s Daniel Hannan. He doesn’t understand the #CustomsUnion, the #SingleMarket or the #Schengen area.
I think we need to help Dan. Norway and Switzerland are in the #SchengenArea. Within the Schengen Area people can cross the borders without passport control. Try driving a lorry full of goods into Norway nd Switzerland and you go through customs checks.
This is Svinesund Customs Station at the main border crossing between Norway and Sweden. It can handle up to 2500 lorries a day. Clearing customs usually takes less than ten minutes, but may tale a couple of hours.

But this should also give remainers some hope. I don’t think it will be possible for UK to leave both #CustomsUnion union and #SingleMarket - UK is not in #Schengen - Norway is in both Schengen and SM which makes trade easier, even if there’s a hard border between 🇸🇪and 🇳🇴
Then there’s the Irish Border of course. Again not possible to have a soft border between NI and ROI if UK leaves Single market and Customs Union. Even an EEA, Norway, solution would require a hard border here. Brexit is stupid!
The PM told #Marr the Canada trade deal (CETA) & draft US deal gave some hope that UK financial services access could be similar to existing ‘passporting’ rights with EU because “financial services are referenced” in those texts. But those ‘references’ are pretty derisory…
The EU-Canadian deal does not allow financial services firms to ‘do business’ or ‘solicit’ in each other’s territories without licence (Article 13.7.6). There just aren’t the automatic rights to establish business activities that UK currently has across Europe via #Single Market
Trump administration will not allow UK financial services access to American markets because any trade deal done at federal level won’t override local state-by-state licencing, insurance regs, banking licence conditions etc. So UK firms won’t be able to trade freely in the States
Preventing a Brexit disaster - and the austerity this entails - requires more than the #CustomsUnion alone. So here’s a few reasons why Labour’s frontbench must, as a minimum, now also back the #SingleMarket (other than for the famous ‘four freedoms’):
Yes a Customs Union is needed. It helps 20% of our economy. For the other 80% (and growing!) of our economy, which is in ‘services’, we need the Single Market. The right to export UK service expertise is vital.
With 11% of our tax revenues coming from the UK financial services sector (£66bn), we need the Single Market so it can trade on the same basis as financial firms from the other 27 countries. We can’t pay for our NHS, schools, welfare support without this revenue.
