I realize the #justicekavanaugh confirmation has been a hyper-partisan issue (that by itself is very concerning for a Supreme Court nomination) 4 wks now but why have the #Hamilton68 Russian influencer accounts spent so much oxygen on this? Like #BeersforBrett ? 
We looked at our roughly 310 Twitter accnts that we reversed engineered as #Hamilton68 accnts (described at dashboard.securingdemocracy.org) and we created wordclouds 4 various segmented categories of our Hamilton68 accounts over the past wk & highlighted them related 2 Judge #Kavanaugh
The first set we looked was our set of #Hamilton68 accounts that focus on Russian geopolitics. 14658 tweets were analyzed over a period of a week and #kavanaugh was the main hashtag promoted as it related to Judge Kavanaugh
On July 22nd Wikileaks released 22000 DNC emails that had been previously hacked by Russian GRU agents. On Oct 7th Wikileaks dumped hacked John Podesta emails soon after the seemingly damaging Access Hollywood tape came out where Donald Trump talked about sexual misconduct @ollie
3million tweets from the Russian Internet Research Agency were recently archived & made available by the site @fivethirtyeight. We wanted to look at particular hashtags related to Green Party Candidate Jill Stein and #DemExit

1/ THREAD: What doesn’t appear on #Hamilton68 is often as interesting as what does. Today, near silence on the Manafort verdict. Instead, the focus is largely on using the Mollie Tibbetts murder to spread divisive content on #immigration. This follows a familiar pattern.
2/ On Dec 1, 2017, accounts monitored on #Hamilton68 pounced on the not guilty verdict in the murder trial of Kate Steinle, who was shot and killed by an undocumented immigrant in San Francisco.
3/ The dashboard’s findings on December 1, 2017 mirror data collected by Clemson Univ. researchers, who recently published more than 3 million tweets from IRA troll accounts.

According to some recent data by @conspirator0 who analyzed the Russian IRA Twitter data dump the conspiracy hashtags of #pizzagate, #pedogate, #qanon ect appear 2 have first been used by these accts in a measurable way in Nov 2016 & really ramping up in Nov 2017. #infosec #psyop
Looking at our current reverse engineered #Hamilton68 #Twitter accts which are described as Russian influencer accts here (dashboard.securingdemocracy.org) .. our domestic Hamilton68 subset pushing #qanon has diverged significantly from the top Alt-right activist accts pushing #walkaway

In conjunction with @SlickRockWeb, now let’s take a look at #WalkAway from a different perspective. Who’s the man behind the curtain, and who’s backing him? His name is Brandon Straka, know here as @UsMinority. Let’s get to know him a bit. #infosec #osint #psyops
Before #WalkAway took off (with surprising rapidity), Straka was a performance artist and stylist in New York. His most recent work appears to have been this show, showing his evolution away from #TheResistance. Here’s a link to the GoFundMe gofundme.com/resist-a-rock-…
His first announcement of the #WalkAway campaign was on May 26th. However, shortly after the dates of his show, on a Facebook post dated 10/27/17, we see the following exchange after a post about @TheEllenShow, which appears to be the first public use of the “walk away” idea.
So for the first time in quite a while a newcomer hashtag had top spot on the #Hamilton68 Dashboard -- #walkaway. We remembered seeing this hashtag in the past few weeks but didnt really know what it was or follow up on it. #infosec #opsec dashboard.securingdemocracy.org
The background story on this hashtag #walkaway is a little strange & the number of bots, trolls, & fake testimonial promoting this hashtag is even stranger. Here's an example of a completely fake tweet highlighted by @daveweigel #opsec #infosec
We decided to look retrospectively at our own reverse engineered #Hamilton68 data. This is a wordcloud of 22893 tweets from our main Hamilton68 troll subset going from June 24th until now & #walkaway takes the #1 spot. #infosec #opsec
The #walkaway campaign is an excellent example of how organic discussions about divisive topics are co-opted by domestic extremists and amplified by foreign actors for maximum disruption. 1/n
When we initially spotted #walkaway on Thursday, we determined the discussion was organic. But 4chan's infamous /pol board was already debating how to exploit it. 2/n
We found Twitter accounts with small follower counts benefiting from a huge spike in engagement. But on closer inspection, some of the #walkaway accounts being amplified are clearly fake. One popular account is using a stock image for a profile photo. 3/n

My year-in-review thread: This year I've been working a fairly unified theme, developing a framework for studying extremism and radicalization.
The most important piece of this was Extremist Construction of Identity, a paper published by the Counter Terrorism Strategic Communications program at @ICCT_TheHague icct.nl/publication/ex…
The framework was derived from a detailed analysis of the ideology that spawned Christian Identity, a violent white nationalist belief system. In two follow-up papers, I applied the framework to the ideology of ISIS.

Both FB and Twitter say they saw no evidence of Russian accounts uploading voter data to target specific lists.
By now, given Russian posts senators have shared, it's clear what the their motive was: to pit the American electorate against itself.
Heinrich says the committee is divided on whether to release all the Russian content. He encourages FB, Twitter, and Google to consider it.
